Cold Air Intake Umbrella
I have an AEM V2 on my my04 and am pretty much paranoid about getting caught in a rainsorm. Have had the car for over a year and never left it out or drove it in the rain because of this. I have heard that by making an "umbrella" to go over the filter pretty much solves the problem with water dripping and collecting in the intake tube and hydrolocking the engine. My question is: Does this work? Have been wanting to take my S on some overnight road trips, but haven't for this reason. BTW, I did plug the drain hole under the hood. Thanks in advance.
The umbrella works pretty well at keeping the filter dry when washing the car. Even after plugging the drain hole, water still got to my filter so I bought a heat shield on ebay and used it as a umbrella. I have drove the car w/ the umbrella through rainy days so I can't tell you for sure it'll work.

You can buy the AEM "bypass valve" that fits between the intake and TB that supposedly prevents hydrolock. http://www.evasivemotorsports.com/merchant...Code=AEM-Bypass
This is one site that sells it, but i've seen another that sells different sizes.
I honestly don't even know if these work.

The AEM bypass valve is not compatible with the AEM v2 Intake, IIRC the v2 intake doesn't separate in the same place as the "v1" intake, so there is not place to put the bypass valve. You can probably cut the pipe to make it work, but its not worth it imho.
I have a heat shield on my AEM v2 on my 04 S2000 and the drain hole taped up too.
First and foremost, the thing you need to worry about isn't driving in the rain, its parking in the rain. The amount of water ingested into the car while driving is minimal and the engine can handle small amounts of water while running (that said, I wouldn't drive through high levels of standing water while the car is running, but just from rain the car will be fine).
The problem is while the engine isn't running. The AEM v2 intake for some reason tilts backwards instead of forwards. This allows water to collect on the filter and then sit at first bend in the intake. When you goto start the engine, the large amount of water that has collected in the intake gets ingested into the engine and you can potentially end up with hydrolock from this.
Some members have actually drilled a small drain hole in that portion of the intake to prevent water from pooling there.
In any case, my car is regularly garaged and rarely driven in the rain. However, I have gotten caught out driving some pretty hard rain, and there was one time at Wake the Dragon '06 that I parked the car overnight and half the day while it was pouring rain. I am happy to report that I have not had a problem either time.
Sorry for the long winded post, but to answer your question, I would say the heatshield works!
