Default Cold Tires

....been reading lots of threads about cold tires, wrecks, spin outs etc.

I don't drive my "S" much in the winter but had it out on Friday night, it was single in the digits. i picked it up from a vallet parking guy at the club i was at went out on the road. everytime i left a light before VTEC even kicked in "Gazzzzeeee" tires would spin, shift into second at like 4 grand more tire spinning... it was crazy. Stock tires still have lots of tread. Just figured i would post the warning once again.

Agreed.

WET ROAD + S2000 + Speeds above 60 MPH = Me wearing depends all day.

I've never owned a car that I feel so uneasy with in anything other than completely dry conditions. Winter weather notwithstanding.

We had some freezing rain that changed to snow overnight, and the S2000 is my daily driver. Before on bad weather days I usually drive my wife to work in our other car and leave the S in the garage. Today for some reason I thought maybe the main roads would be ok for me to drive. BIG mistake I made it to the interstate from my house and I should have noticed that I had almost no traction. As soon as I got going on the 3 lane interstate (got up to about 40MPH) I started sliding sideways, I have no control at this point just along for the ride. I proceed to start into a 360 spin across all 3 lanes of the morning rush hour traffic, car stalls and I was lucky enough to get it restarted and off on the shoulder without ever touching another car or anything else! HOLLY CRAP I proceeded to drive 9-10 MPH on the shoulder with my hazards flashing, got off the highway and creaped home. I am buying snow tires this week, problem is they are hard to come by in our sizes this late in the season.

No offence, but I don't understand this at all.

You say that you've "been reading lots of threads about cold tires, wrecks, spin outs etc" and yet you STILL took your S out in single digits with OEM tires!? Shouldn't reading all those threads suggest that this WASN'T a good idea?

It's thinking like this that cause those threads to begin with.

On good tires? I have found the RE050's (i.e. the OEM tires on 04+ models) to be quite good in the rain, assuming they have enough tread. This includes some rainy-day track time at my first HPDE class. Just don't push the limits like you would on a hot, dry day.

As for the cold -- yes, summer tires in extreme cold = bad.

My stock tires seem fine in the wet... I have an 04 model also though.

And you think this car is unpredictable in the wet? Try driving a modified turbo MR2!! My old MR2 had double the torque my S2000 has at a lower RPM... talk about scary haha.

I can not attest to the fact the s2000 does poor in cold condition

However, the s2000 does just fine in the rain.

I live in OR, it rains 250 days/year or something crazy

Its the driver that can not handle an s2000 in the rain. Have to drive conservative and not like a sportscar and you'll be just fine. I have gone weeks w/out v-teching, but better to be safe than sorry.

I have the fuzions... and I have also VTEC'ed 1st and 2nd gear to 9000RPM on a 35 degree night with wet roads...

Sure, the tires spun, but it didn't make me spin out or anything. -- I also tried a 3rd gear VTEC engagement and my tires didn't break loose then. As for just normal driving in the rain, my Fuzion's are excellent, and are great for a little tail happy 90-degree-turn when your right foot and hands see fit.
