Default Combating Laser Tickets

Someone wrote:
You say you beat laser in court. I would really appreciate any info you could give me on that. I recently got a laser ticket, 85 in a 70. I saw the cop aim the gun at me and my detector (Escort SR-1 mounted in the grill area) went off. Instantaneously I looked at my speedo and I was at at 76. Since They always give you 9 mph here I was startled when the cop pulled me over. I insisted her reading was incorrect, to no avail. I have no front license plate and a black aftermarket mesh grill. So what did they use for reflection? Can they get a good reading off our slanted headlights? any help would be appreciated.

1.) Your best bet is talk to a cop friend that is certified to use lasar. If you don't have one try offering to buy one a cup of coffee at the local Starbucks as you explain who you don't believe there was a correct reading on a recent ticket you got. If not go to the local police training center and ask to speak to an instructor on lasar speed devices. They WILL talk to you. It is your right to know this public information and if it was refused to you (which it won't be) by the same police dept you would have grounds for dismissal. In other words, they are glad to enlighten you on their proceedures. Ask them if they can obtain a reading from our "style of headlights".

2.) Do a "search" on this forum. I wrote a long detailed post on this subject. Try looking under "speeding ticket or laser ticket". It may even be under a V1 thread. After you find the thread please post the URL and we'll go from there.

3.) Most importantly you must know "How to present your case in court". Otherwise the judge will not take your testimony seriously. Ask a cop friend on "How to" or.... we can go over this later. Research lasar detection and the gun used. Call your officer and ask him the exact model they used on you and what he used for a target. He will have to tell you at least what model device was used.

If it sounds like to much trouble so far than don't bother. If you still want to proceed I'll be glad to help. In the mean time I'll see what I can dig up but I will expect others to initiate the digging.

I don't pretend to be an expert in this area, however I recently attended our local police department's Citizen Police Academy. When we were instructed on the use of the laser, we had a laser lab on the street in front of the police dapartment - a very lightly traveled street. Students took turns driving their cars up and down the street while other students used the laser gun to determine their speeds. We learned several things about the laser. In the absence of a front plate, the headlights are an alternative target. I could get a readings off the headlights about as easily as from the license plates. And these headlights were of various shapes. You are using the headlight's reflector and so the headlight design doesn't seem to matter much. It takes only a second or two, at most, from the time you pull the trigger on the gun until it beeps and you have a reading. And so, by the time your laser detector goes off, you are had. And finally these guns are extremely easy to use. All of us were able to get quick and accurate readings after one or two attempts. Our police department writes approximately 75% of its citations based on laser vs. radar.

I think I saw this on The Learning Channels once. It was a show about traffic radars. The guy claims he beat 7 out of 8 laser tickets. I don't remember all the details, but heres how. Go down to the court and request some kind of form. (its the one the allow you to request information.) Using this form, request a bunch of documents, such as the officers training on laser rader, the calibiration report on the laser, maintance recorders on the laser and some more I can not remember. Most of the time he claims that one of those forms will be outdated and the ticket will be throw out. I don't know it this works.

The best way to combat a laser ticket is to buy a V1 and avoid them all together.

I'm still in the dark ages, and yes, I get burned. I just got a ticket by...stationary radar...(ancient tech) on my way to the St. Louis meet. Oh well, guess I'll have to get a detector...

S2kchick,

In fact I think that the best way to combat a laser ticket is to stick within the speed limit.....

I never break the speed limit and I have never had a laser ticket
