THE COMPTECH SUPERCHARGER: My Review.
I hope this comes in handy for anyone considering a blower for the s2k. My only modification is the supercharger.
1. I had it done at Comptech. How nice they are is another thread in itself. The install was quick, clean and they let me hang around and watch. Thumbs up!
2. Blower Whine: possibly the coolest thing in the world. Its a very light, high pitched whistling that you can hear noticeably when cruising down a shady residential street at 30 mph. But it goes away rapidly when you start driving faster. Its unobtrusive at most speeds.
3. Since the blower was installed I have noticed a very small amount of vibration coming through the gear shift. Its not bad, but jump from a stock car to an SCd car, and you will notice it.
4. I was on the freeway for over an hour, came to stop at an intersection with the vents on, and got a slight whiff of fuel. Im told that is common also. No biggie. It went away quickly. Just turn your vent off if it bugs you.
5. Power: NOTE: someone who is unhappy with their s2000 now will probably not be thrilled with it after the blower. Take a stock s2k powerband and feed it crack:thats a blown s2k. There is more power at virtually all rpms, and the car seems to get moving off the line quicker, but it never was a torque monster, and the blower doesnt turn it into one.
Light the fires under 6k, and you will be thinking: hmmmmmmm, 5 grand for this? And then as you cross 6 grand, you better be paying close attention because the car just explodes forward. If you thought the s2k had a Jekyl and Hyde Vtec personality, its now the incredible hulk. Vtec = serious rapido transportation.
I had heard that people have trouble hitting the rev limited in the first two gears when initially driving a blown s2k. I hit it in third, the first time, and watched traffic that was slowly passing me get left behind like they had hit reverse. The odds of getting into trouble DO go up..........the car rockets forward under boost.
The great thing about this setup is that you can use as much of it as you want. Looking to get somewhere quickly? 5k is enough for most. Looking to accelerate hard? 7k should do it. Want to dust an M3? shift at 9,000 rpms. As with all centrifugal blowers, the boost climbs as the revs climb, so you get the feeling that you can just keep going faster and faster and faster.
6. Sound: The comptech icebox gives the car a REALLY throaty growl under part throttle below 6k rpms. After 6k.............hmmmmmmm..........honestly, Im too busy watching the road to remember what it sounds like. But it sounds good, thats for damn sure.
7. Parts: From what Ive seen so far, I have every expectation that my driveterain will hold up to the boost. Its a great kit, and designed (from what I can tell) to add more fun to the mix, without modifying the car to within an inch of its life. Keep in mind that I get my kicks from winding the car out on an on-ramp..........it wont see the strip or the track any time soon. Track, I can understand, but you bought the wrong car and did the wrong mods if you are looking to be king of the 1/4.
8. Gas Mileage: To my utter amazement, I get the same mileage. I got 260 miles out of a full tank, and that included two WOT dyno runs in third, and plenty of "road testing"...
The same mileage!! Something must be wrong. However, after much carefull consideration, I have decided not to call Comptech to complain about this.......................................
9. Fun Factor: This car is a serious street fighter now. I was coming back from SF last night and a Civic SI wanted to play. Now I understand what they mean by "buslengths."
A very enthusiastic thumbs up, and I will keep everyone posted with regard to my experiences with this incredible car.

I just cannot WAIT for the aftercooler. I saw the prototype......I will be there the same day they announce they are ready to bolt it on. I would say this retrofit is a must-have for people who track the car, or those who live in areas where it gets warm in summer.
