Default Cost to replace differential???

Honda is telling me it will cost $4000 to replace my differential. This seems kind of high to me, but I'm not a real car nut.

Anyone have any idea if this is about right?

And how hard would it be to do it myself. I used to work on cars when I was younger but just don't have the time anymore. However, for $4000, I can make some time if it is something I can do.

Any thoughts, ideas, help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Geez. Could it really be that much? We've done a couple of 2-way 240sx differentials and it involved unbolting the diff (a bunch of stuff is connected to it) and dropping it out (used a jack). We then got a rear end specialist to install the new lsd in the pumpkin. Then reinstall the differential back in the car. I think dropping the diff and stuff took an hour or two. The rear end guy charged maybe $200 to install the aftermarket lsd in the pumpkin...

I heard rebuilding differentials can be more difficult becuse stuff flies out or something... but we just took out an open diff and replaced with a 2-way.

Hope that helps?

if you DIY, the whole assembly cost about $2500..i don't know if it comes assembled, though. if you go to www.hondapartssource.com , it may give you an idea.

Seems like you could get a replacement from a wrecked car - a front end wreck - and save $$$ at an independent mechanic. Thats a lot of change. At a minimum I would shop the part (there's markup there) and the labor at independent shops.

you need to find out what exactly is broken. is it just Lsd, gears, the inner housing, outter housing?? if everything is broken i would say yes that sounds about right. honda quoted me 4000 in damage but when i inspected the pasts i found only my gears were broken and the lsd. i ended up replacing both myself and it cost me under 2k

Is it a warranty item or considered a wear item like a clutch?

HondaCare replaced mine under the extended warranty. So most shops will call it a warranty item.

I got my diff replaced back in December of 2002 under warranty at Steven's Creek Honda ,and I took a look at the parts list. It said that the full replacement was around $3850, so the $4000 price tag seems to match what mine said.
