The knob is heavier, spherical and drilled deeper than the standard knob thus making it sit down further on the shifter stem. As well as drilling a deeper thread you also remove (countersink) the first part of the thread so it will screw down further over the smooth shaft of the shifter. Most people report an improved feel to their shifting due to the extra heft of the heavier knob.
