So, what is the deal with a clamp and safety wire? Is there a link to the how and what for this.

Since it is pretty certain that I will get another one (just stubborn I guess), I would like to know. I dont think I can expect my insurance company to be "friendly" twice!

 

A guy on the Acura forums just recently had a service done where the mechanic left a greasy rag laying on his engine, and it caught fire a few weeks later. Luckily, the owner figured it out before his engine went up in flames. Negligence on the dealership, could have possibly been the same thing with yours?

 

I think it has become ever more obvious that "Service Tech # 387" at Hendrick Honda on South Blvd, Charlotte, NC failed to properly install my oil filter. By simple process of elimination of the suspects.

1) clean engine the day before so no rags or leaks or other malfunctions.

2) normal driving conditions and normal driving (no high speeds or over-revs)

3) the location of the intitial fire directly over the oil filter.

4) the thick film of oil that trailed under the car from that side all the way to the back of the car and the oil slick on the road behind the car.

5) the loose oil filter after the fire (fell right off in my hand with 1 turn).

6) the complete lack of oil in the pan when I took the filter off.

7) the approximately 70 miles over three driving days that the car had been driven since the oil change.

8) the fact that this car has to have its oil filter put on to a different specification than other cars of the same make. Most cars are "hand tighten"

9) nobody has given me ANY reason to suspect anything or anyone else. Just nothing else it could be.

Well guys, wish me luck. I am going to contact the dealership now to see what they would like to do for me on this. I am not asking for a replacement car, just a veeeeerrrrryyy good deal on a new one and I think a refund for the service I had (new clutch and oil change $1300) and my $250 deductible would be fair.

 

I think that's more than fair. But they should also pony up for a rental while you look for a new car.

And your tank of gas that was in the car when it went up in flames.

I'd be asking the dealership for more and then set your expectations to get what you detailed here.

 

Not if the dealer left the old oil filter gasket in place, then put the new oil filter on. (Many of the previous instances have happened this way)
So...
When changing your oil filter, ALWAYS make sure the oil seal from the old filter is off before installing the new one.

 

I'm amazed that front tire didn't blow, its still inflated on there
