cutting console to make room for vafc ... how do you do it right?
m777erlin, i hope you don't mind me borrowing this pic. if so, let me know, and i'll take it down, but you did such a beautiful job.
i've never done any body work, and i really don't want to mess this up so here's a few questions about the pic above if someone could help:
1. what kind of paint would you recommend to paint the front? flat black for the color, i suppose, right?
2. should i put some type of clear coat on top of it?
3. if i mess up the paint job, would acetone be the right strength to take off the paint to try again? or would that be too harsh on the plastic?
4. how are the edges around the cut so smooth? can you cut it out with dremmel, then sand it down? if so, what kind of sand paper should i use on plastic?
5. what's the easiest way to have the vafc face flush with the console? metal brackets holding it up on both sides or is there something easier or better?
my car is ultimately going to be for show so my mount definitely isn't optimal when it comes to being able to eyeball it when i'm driving, but it's a trade off. i think it's a great, unobtrusive use of space, which we definitely don't have a lot of.
nope. the best i've found so far is one from leo gets. do a search for his name and vafc, and you should find the one i'm referring to.
it doesn't seem too hard, however. just a small section to dremel out behind the emergency break, remove the coin holder and put it in.
i'm guessing super gluing some aluminum brackets on the inside to hold it in place, and that should do the trick. that's the next mod on my list. i might shoot some pics and write a few words when the time comes.
fyi ... when i asked leo about #5, his recommendation was a xenodrine bottle underneath. siad it was just the right size. i've been having a hell of a buzz lately trying to finish off that bottle in time too. woo hoo!!!!
