I'm really not sure about Canadian differences, but this is what I know about the US models.
The changes between '01 and '02 as I know them now:
1- refined transmission
2- heavier clutch
3- glass rear window
4- defrost switch on dashboard
5- enhanced white line detail on tach from 0 to 9000
6- 10 watts per channel power increase in stereo along with new face
7- tweeters in doors
8- silver trim details inside on doors
9- new silver badge on lower door sill
10- new leather wrapped shift knob
11- vinyl center console instead of carpet
12- standard floor mats WITH 2 securing posts
13- metal dead pedal to match design of other pedals
14- larger exterior logos front and rear
15- silver trim rings around taillights
16- new color blue and lighter/brighter color silver
17- no 2-tone interior like in '01, when you order red it is ALL red!
Good luck!

I just went and looked at the first '02 here in my neck of the woods, and I discovered another small change. They've designed the front bumper with a small spacer where it meets the fenders on the top of the car. This eliminates the rubbing at the junction and the corresponding paint loss on many cars.
The gap between the two pieces is noticeably wider now.

Do you still want to know the difference between the VIN? The VIN should be on the dash by driver side or every body panels! If the body panel are missing the VIN, then the car was in an accident and they have replace the panels!
The 10th digit of the VIN determind the year. That's the number right before the letter "T". If it is "Y" that's a 2000 model, if it is "1" that's 2001 model, if it is "2" that is the 2002 model.
example of VIN:
JHM AP1 1 4 * 2 T 000001 (for US model)
JHM AP1 1 4 * 2 T 800001 (for Canadian model)
JHM: Manufacturer -Japan Honda Motor
AP1: Line, Body, Engine type -S2000/F20C1
1: Body type and Transmission type -2 door covertible/6-speed Manual
4: Vehicle grade -S2000
*: Check digit
Y or 1 or 2: Model year
T: Factory code -Tochigi Factory in Japan
Last 6 digit: Serial number
