Does Double Clutching Help? Do you double clutch?
Actually, I sometimes do double clutch. When the transmission is cold and I have to downshift, it does reduce (eliminate if I do it well) the gear clash.
As everyone has said, synchros eliminate the need for double clutching. Will the synchros last longer if you double clutch? Yes, but you are using the clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder twice as much.
As CoralDoc said, if you can master rev matching and heel-toe, you can really have some fun. It takes some practice.

I double clutch all the time. Whenever I'm approaching a turn and coasting (instead of braking) I sometimes double clutch. It's fun and I can rev match better double clutching rather than "single" clutching. Just something about the timing. My dad taught me on my first car ('85 Jetta) 14 years ago and it's just a part of driving a manual now. It's not any slower if you can pump that clutch pedal in less time than it takes to shift the gear lever. I know it's completely unnecessary in modern cars but it's still fun.
That being said I never double clutch when I'm auto-xing. There is simply no place on an auto-x course for it. Heel-toe shifting yes, double clutching no.

It never ceases to amaze me how every once in a while people pop out of the woodwork to ask about this and one of the reasons is to "save wear and tear" on the synchros.
THAT'S WHY THEY ARE THERE! SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO DOUBLE CLUTCH!
Man came out of the Stone Age because better things came along. It's like somebody giving you an electric drill and you go back to using your hand driven auger to make holes in wood because you don't want to put wear and tear on your electric drill. They gave us HID headlights, too and they cost a fortune to replace, so to save wear and tear on those, maybe we should light candles and put them all over the dash - use cut out soup cans for reflectors.
As already said: "Damn that F & F movie". Now we've got a nation of kids thinking that's the way you shift when you drag race.
And it's "cool" to shift like that. Well, go ahead and shift like that. I'll be waiting for you at the next stop light while you're being "cool". I might even have time to run into the 7/11 to pick up a slurpy.

I double clutch every time I downshift to 1st or 2nd gear, in my Dad's 1957 MGA!
However I have never double clutched in the S2000, nor do I ever plan to. And my 2002, it just slips right into 1st at 20mph or more, no grind, not notchieness, just as simple and slick as the finest 6-speed in the world ought to be.

I hear ya xviper!!! It seems like we've had about three or four of these exact same threads in the past few weeks. Part of the problem is that people don't understand the difference between double clutching, rev matching, and heel and toe.
i ALWAYS double clutch a large rpm change, sure if u down shift from 6 5 4 3 2 1 its not a prob
but when your commin off the free way and u late brake a bit and need to get to 1st or 2nd gear....just slamming it in....not good.
the syncro-mesh can do alot of magic these days. However i dont like to test it. Whenever your doing a large rpm change quickly from gear to gear up or down make sure u match revs neutral and clutch out before clutchin in and picking ur gear...
