SomethingWicked, cdelena, excess, this has happened ONLY in 4th gear ? That can't be coincidence. Only have 600 miles on my S, so far no popout problem. I remember the first gen MR2s have the 5th gear popout problem.

Mine has only happened in fourth gear during gentle acceleration.

Mine also popped out only from 4th gear. It was during gentle to moderate acceleration each time. Also, I don't think my hand was resting on the shift knob, although I understand the necessity of keeping pressure off of it. Each time it suprised me greatly.

I'm almost afraid to take it to the dealership,...I can imagine them making it worse. I'm hoping that it's a new tranny problem and one that will work itself out. I know, I might be very naive. I will keep a careful eye on it.

FWIW, this happened to me once in my '00, but this was during a hard acceleration in *second* gear while the car was cold.

I don't remember any of the details, but I thought there was some thread a while ago suggesting that this might be some sort of feature to prevent heavy loading on a cold engine(?). Could this be physically possible???

Anyways, between this suggestion and the concern about cold S-02s (wrong or right), I now avoid hard accelerations while the car is cold and I haven't had the problem ever since.

Don't mean to resurrect this thread, but is anyone w/ an '02 having this problem? I've had my '02 pop out of 2nd about five times (in 1.7K miles), while accelerating hard and generally (get this) turning left (once across oncoming traffic, Doh!).

Off to the dealer...

There is a TSB out there somewhere, I had to have my whole tranny replaced because of this little bugger, apparently a few of the shifting forks came out on spec but just a little to much out of wack and is causing this sort of thing to happen, from what I understand it was limited to 2000 and 2001's but you are the third person with a newer (2002) that it is happening to. Do a seach for forth gear pop out and you will find my story including the resolution and how to deal with the dealership.

On my 2nd track day at 5000 miles I started to have problems getting a good shift into 4th. All of a sudden it just didn't like going into fourth the way I have always done it. Now I have to really slow down the shift an be very deliberate.

I am concerned and considering taking it to the dealer. But, how do you tell them that it only happens at 9k going into 4th...

I'm havin this problem. My dealer has ordered the parts for the '01 tsb even though mine is an '02. This is what Honda has told them to do.

Here's a couple of threads on the issue:

Good luck.
