Depending on the speed at which you enter the drift, I'd say full throttle is a bad idea in a lot of cases. The amount of throttle you apply is more dependent on other variables so just flooring it after the back and comes loose could allow the car to snap back violently in the other direction, in which case you'll go spinning.

Learning to apply the correct amount of throttle while judging the speed of the back end coming loose and steering just enough to straighten her out is the art.

Thanks for the great response to this little thread. I will be attending performance driving schools this summer and will hopefully learn something I can share with all of you. As far as drifting goes. I will try the mall parking lot with the power over technique {enter a turn - pull the wheel - give it the gas - counter steer - hold on. In regards to mall security if we need to be worried about a K car and a blazer all s2000 owner should hang their heads and go home.
I love this car and intend to become the best driver I can be in it.

I do agree with what you guys are saying about full throttle not always being the best. But in the low torque S2000, full throttle is pretty much necessary to break the back end loose properly....especially with S02s. Also, I never said S02s were too sticky for drifiting, I said they were definitely not the best tire for drifiting which is pretty obvious.

Well, I believe it depends on the road surface also, just like in street racing. Full throttle to moderate throttle modulation I find varies on the surface. Lots of roads in Riverside are really gravelly, so full throttle is not necessary.

I left work last night around 8:00 pm and headed over to the mall and tried drifting last night. I was extremely hesitant about going too fast and pulling the steering wheel but after a few tries I was able to get enough confidence to go fast enough and turn the wheel quick. After about 15 min. and a few small rear end drifts I decided to do one good one and go home. So here is what I did. Oh first let me tell you about the conditions. I was at Oxford Valley Mall in Bucks County PA. Temp was 55

That's pretty cool Reese. It's always good to go learn the limits of the car. By the way, the mall police, always have those yellow lights on.

I've tried doing the same here, but I can't find any parking lots big enough, empty enough, or without too many obstructions. Mall lots don't clear out until after 2am around here. Anyone know of someplace I could find a big empty lot in the L.A. area at a reasonable hour (or not)?
