If the car behind you is very close you can put your hand brake on and as you engage the clutch, when you feel the car wants to move, you put your hand brake back to it's ( off ) position.
That will prevent your car hitting the car behind you.

when you want to downshift, just push in the clutch, shift to ure desired gear and let go of the clutch as you gas. make sure you dont go into a lower gear than you're supposed to. i.e. 2nd gear in 80.

i'd suggest if the s2000 is your first manual car.. do a lot of research on the car itself. this board is a perfect place to learn everything. read the tsbs and bulletins.. and read the manual.

good luck !

Practice in a parking lot and back roads until you feel confident, we all had to learn sometime. Good Luck.

The cars behind him, judging by his post.

Seriously, practice in a parking lot or an EMPTY mall parking garage (the ramps are good to practice starting without rolling back).

After reading this thread I thought that you might also be having a little trouble driving your S2000 in heavy traffic.

Why don't you take a read through a post started on 1/2/03 in the Under The Hood forum, entitled: "Car Shook Going Uphill, Please Help".

Kind Regards, Chris

Don't worry about the manual transmission. It will come rather quickly. I learned to drive mine in abou 2 hours time. It then takes a few days to smooth everything out. Once you ca launch the car the hardest thing is to launch it quickly enough at the light when there is someone behind me. It took me a while to get my launch right and I had people honking at me for not goin in the begining Its a great car, you wont be disapointed

Trying to remember when i was first learning to drive. And what stuck most is....Just dont get flustered. If you are new to the clutch, and you have people behind you, its easy to do.
-
But when on a hill, w/someone close behind me, or what ever reason i want to prevent any backwards roll....take t.c.'s advice...use the hand break..as you are feel the car ready to move, slowly let off the hand break, and you will prevent any back roll.

for downshifting...thier are 2 meathods...
1. if you are trying to catch vtech immedietly to speed up, its usually safe to drop 2 gears ((i.e. 5th - 3rd) and release the clutch and hit the gas..., except, i dont recommend dropping into 1st to haul @$$, make 2nd you bottoming out point.
2. if it is for slowing down ease off the clutch to prevent excessive wear.

sorry its longwinded, but thats it in a nutshell.
