driving in the rain? is it really dangerous?

Default driving in the rain? is it really dangerous?

Ok so today it rained pretty crazy for the 1st time this summer. Afte rrading all the crash stories I got all paranoid on the freeway and cruised at like 65 mph and didnt accelerate or anything. IS the s2k really that bad or is it bad drivers?

I had a 450hp 300zxTT and drove her 70-75 no prob and even boosted her in rain jsut to see what happens and I'd feel the back end get loose and correct. I learned alot about RWD from that car and I feel pretty safe now driving RWD.

Does losing control just happen in the rain or is it driver changed lanes to fast, punched it a lil, maybe changed gears or something. From my view the s2k seems pretty good. The posts and stories have made me paranoid though.

the only time shes ever got loose was when I drive over holes in the street I can feel it like momentraily, like the rears about to get loose but then in that fraction of a second it corrects itself.

I've driven in thunderstorms at 70mph+so bad I had to finally get off the highway to see. The OEM tires were great- at least for the first 5-6 thousand miles. After that they get squirrly in any rain.
I have replaced them w/Yokohma AVS ES100s which do much better, longer in the rain. But there is some loss of dry road traction. And they didn't last on the rears as long as the Bridgestones (only 9k vs 11k) But they are less expensive by far to buy.

I drive the car in the rain quite often - Hell, I jut did a track event at Sebring last weekend and it rained the last two sessions and everyone left exept Coraldoc in his Miata me and my friend in his Gallardo - It was very loose on my track tires but was a great experience in control in wet conditions! you need to be very careful of road conditions needless to say - you can not drive this car as you normally would.

i think the s2k is very dangerous in the rain esp...u gotta be careful and drive a lil slower...i notice that when im on the highway and its raining hard the front wheels seem to hydroplane at times...

what The S is not very dangerous in the rain. Just remember you are driving a RWD car and you will be fine. And if you are hydroplaning, that is a problem with your tires, not the car.

Tires and wits/common sense...that's always been my opion too for necessary things for driving anything in the rain or snow!

Very true.

I have a relatively new set of SO3's on and they handle very well in the rain but there are still two things I don't do in the rain no matter what tires I have on the "s".

1. I don't corner extremely hard.
2. I don't VTEC.

Abide by these rules and you'll be fine in the rain.

Anyone who truly feels this car shouldn't be driven in the rain because it's dangerous needs to either sell the car or go take some driving lessons. This is ludicrous! It's a rear-wheel drive car that's different from all those FWD cars. The characteristics are DIFFERENT, not dangerous.

Have good tires on nay car and you can drive it. Just remember that traction is reduced (duh!) and drive sensibly. Same goes for snow or any other reduced traction scenario. NASCAR doesn't drive in the rain because they're wusses...

Wow,

I really must be getting old. I find nothing dangerous at all about my car in the wet. And I have damn near bald tires in the back (being replaced ASAP as I ordered new tires last week). I've hydroplaned at 60 mph on a couple of occasions, but I just slowed down, and maintained control.

Back in ye olden days, when I learned to drive, FWD cars were few and far between, and we all learned to drive on snow and ice with RWD vehicles. It's not that it's dangerous, but as one poster said, you have to use common sense.

I've kicked the tail out in my S2K a number of times. Usually on purpose, occasionally by mistake. A bit of opposite lock, and keeping a cool head is all that is required. But I will go along with the poster who suggested driving lessons. FWD cars have dumbed down the driving population to a very large degree.

If you think the S2k is hard to handle in the wet, I suggest you COMPLETELY avoid mid-60s mustangs, pony cars, muscle cars, high performance european cars without traction control, etc. And whatever you do, don't even turn the crank on a Shelby Cobra (original type, not the new stuff). That car will get you into trouble in a heartbeat. And avoid Porshce 911s prior to the 993, because you'll get them ass-end into a ditch or a tree with that engine hanging out past the rear axle.
