Default Driving the S2K in the snow???

I currently own a 2002 Acura Cl Type S, and it's a wonderful car.

I was driving past the local honda dealer and they have a 2002 S2K with 1600 miles on it. RED... $29,500.

Being from the Chicago area, we get hammered with snow. I need a car I can drive 365 days a year. Do snow tires transform this car into something that can be driven in the snow? Or should I stick with my CL? I really don't want to insure THREE cars (wife has a car too)... So it's ditch the CL for the S2K or be happy with what I got.

Also, does $29,500 seem like a good price for the car? It's in perfect shape. The owner had to get rid of it because his business needed him to drive a truck. I drove it probably 40 miles and it seemed a-ok. Can an extended warranty be gotten for this car?

I'd appreciate any and all comments!

Thanks!

Yes you can. There are a million threads on this. Anyone who says you can't hasn't tried or can't drive. But you MUST use snow tires.

Yes, the S can be driven in the snow. Plenty of owners in snow country use their S in snow. If you're willing to take the extra effort to replace the tires with snow tires during the winter, then check it out.

Also, the S is not as practical as the Acura you currently own. Completely different cars; convertible vs. hardtop; the S is higher maintenance as well. There's a lot of stuff to look at and maintain, being a highly strung sports car. Of course, the fun value exceeds the maintenance factor.

Have you checked the trade-in value for your Acura? You may be able to get a good deal for it. You can get an extended warranty for the S, too. I don't know what the Chi town market is like these days, but $29k seems reasonable for the mileage. I'm sure someone from the local area can be of more assistance there.

I didn't do a search and I can't remember what anybody else has written on this topic but I can answer the first bit. In snow on potenzas you will not move if stopped and you will not stop if moving. I'm from Minnesota. I know how to drive in snow. I was delivered in snow, I walked to school in snow, I lost my virginity in snow, I eat snow, crap snow, and if it's cold enough, I fart snow.

Being from Chicago I'm sure you know how to drive in snow as well but knowledge won't really help if your hung-up on 10 inch deep ice or stopped at the base of snow-covered hill. I'd have a set of snow tires in my garage WHEN I bought the S2000. No putting it off, or I'll do it next weekends, etc. With a set of those you should be ok for light stuff and recently plowed roads but forget it if you end up off the pavement.

As to the other questions about price...I'll leave that to the experts.

$29,500 seems high for a used MY2002. Check here to get a better feel for the market and where you should negotiate from.

Good luck.

Just to give you an idea of price, I got my '03 with 24 miles for 30,800.

Here are the results of a search I did:
http://search.s2ki.com/search.php?q=snow+f...20&m=all&wm=wrd
Go to the ones about "snow day clip #2,3 and 4" (3 separate threads) and view the vids of our "snow drags".

Guys... Thanks for the replies. I mentioned to my wife the "opportunity" to drive a red convertible and her eyes lit up.

Yeah, the S and the CL are two COMPLETELY different beasts, and they both seem to have thier +'s and -'s.

Trade-in on the CL was pretty low, but that's to be expected. I'm concerned that I'd have a hard time selling this privately; not too many people want to buy barely "used" cars. They can get news ones, significantly discounted with great interest rates. Another nice perk of trading to the dealer is the sales tax savings. Not sure how it works elsewhere, but in Indiana, you're only taxed on the difference between the cars. So it'd be only a couple thousand versus 30K.

I'm really torn right now. I'm trying to figure out how "practical" this car is as a daily driver, because that is what I'd need it for. We don't have kids, so I really only need the car to carry a few groceries and a couple bags of golf clubs.

And for mods... I've done a few things on my CL. Intake, sway bars, strut bars... Seems that S2K people are getting denied service here for adding performance mods? Now that sucks.

I would certainly get a dedicated set of rims and snow tires for the snow months here... Sounds to me like it is possible to drive the car in the white stuff.

I guess the ultimate question is, should I do it??? I love my CL, but the S2K is one SWEET ride.
