Dumbest S2000 Add-On
I don't mean a dumb person uses one. I mean, "It sure seems dumb to ME!" Hey, I once put two carbs on a motor scooter and it doesn't get much dumber than that. So, I'm not talking about people and their choices - I'm talking about something that makes absolutely no sense to you.
Here's mine: "Titanium Shift Knob Designed for the S2000 with a nod to Honda's great racing heritage. This shift knob provides a unique feel and distinctive appearance. List Price $159.00 Shipping weight 1 lbs View Installation Instructions."
I'm wondering: titanium looks a lot like aluminum so it looks the same - it's not much lighter than aluminum so it doesn't cut any weight and - well, it is a bit stronger, so it will take the hard shifts? Go figure!

I actually bought the Ti voodoo knob, but heck, its part for show and partly because its different properties than Al - for one thing, its a tad heavier than Al, and secondly it doesn't retain the heat that Al does - thus in the Texas heat, my hand doesn't get fried.

RICE doesn't taste good! So why do it?
Schatten said, "it doesn't retain the heat that Al does - thus in the Texas heat, my hand doesn't get fried." Ok, it does make a little sense now, but $159 to cool your hand? Do like my wife does, put a towel over your shift lever to keep the sun off. I do note that on a hot day after a long drive I can feel some heat in the original shift knob. At this point I'm still not ready to invest in that mod.
Turbo or supercharger on a street car.......
I know people will shout me down, but I don't think that anyone who uses the extra speed/power whatever, that these give you, on the road deserves to have a licence.
Can you actually get to 60 any quicker SAFELY? Do you get a chance to do more than 150 SAFELY?
Not IMHO! Just my opinion, which is what this thread was asking for......

I bought the OEM Honda real titanium shift knob and I know for a fact that it has the following advantages.
It is heavier than the aluminum shift knob by 55 grams. That weight, do to its strategic location, makes the car's balance 50/50. Without the titanium piece, the balance is 49.9999 front 50.0001 rear. Those numbers hold for 1st, 3rd and 5th. I'm still gathering data for 2nd and 4th. I haven't used 6th since I passed 600 miles. Check it yourself.
It's weight damps out a terrible ossilation in the shift knob at 9,100 rpm. This ossilation has caused numerous problems in aluminum shift knob equipped S2000s: 1-2 grind, 3-4 grind, differential housing failure, and severe understeer with the car spinning and wrecking.
Aluminum shift knobs heat up so much in normal Wyoming summers that shifting always causes 2nd degree burns. Titanium shift knobs never cause any burn worse than 1.7 degrees.
Although Honda has tried to cover it up, there is no relationship between the #4 cylinder and the metal chosen for the shift knob. This statement has not been validated for VooDoo titanium knobs. I have stuck a pin in the shift knob of my AutoArt Silver/Black, but nothing bad happened to #52.
I hope this settles the matter.
