Default Is this engine damage or what?

I have been looking at a lot of S2000s. I saw this picture. Any ideas what would cause peeling paint on the engine cover?

Nah..... Very very common.... only cosmetic.... worry more about how many previous owners, engine noises, fluids.. maintenance records, accidents.... etc...
Looks very clean...

Use it as an incentive to repaint another color.

Engine compartment is a difficult environment to keep paint on an aluminum valve cover, i.e., heat, cold, oil, grease, etc. Lazyrider was spot-on with his comments...very common for paint to peel.

Yes, mine is a 2002 and has it on just 1 small spot, smaller than a dime. I only use a wet rag to clean the engine, though.

That part seems to have been replaced on many other S2000s, as 04-05 valve covers are on a long-duration back order...at least mine is.

Or rear fenders. Looks like the car was either repainted and they didn't keep the vin stickers or it was in a huge accident they had to replace the rear fender as well.

I would walk away from this one.
