Default Engine of the year - four years running

When people talk shit about your 2 liter 240hp engine that puts out a measly 153 pound-feet of torque, remind them that a panel of 50 engine experts from around the world dubbed it the best engine in the 1.8 to 2 liter category four years in a row.

I'm curious to find out if the 2.2L will appear in the next class for 2004.

Also of note, the RENESIS won international engine of the year for 2003. That's pretty cool.

If the Renesis is a 1.3 liter, why is it under 2.5-3.0L category?

I'll answer my own question:
"Although a 1.3-litre at rest, the RENESIS is the equivalent of a 2.6-litre when in motion and is indeed officially classified as part of this category by some European states. But such is the nature of a rotary engine, which sees pressure contained in chambers created by different areas of the housing and convex faces of a triangular rotor, that one could even theoretically judge the engine to be a 3.9-litre!"

I wonder if they take into account the missing HP and crappy fuel economy that the Renesis seems to be plagued with right now? It's a neat concept for an engine, I just think Mazda didn't get all the bugs worked out of it before release.

I also find it strange that it gets top honors with such lousy gas milage.

do you think the piston engine got great power and mileage when it was in it's infancy? the rotary still is, seeing as how only a few manufacturers have bothered to toy with it. if it got the same R&D dollars from the same number of people around the world as piston engines, it could be a much different monster...

mazda's work should be applauded.

Well, I think there's a lot more to the voting procedure than HP and fuel economy.

Additionally, I wouldn't say the Wankel Rotary is in its infancy. It's been in developement for over 30 years. Also, the reason Mazda is the only company manufacturing it is because they're the only ones left with licensing to do so.
