Event Data Recorder (AKA Black Box)
You guys are too anal about it. The actual black box only records seatbelt activity, airbags, and a built in G sensor that records the amount of Gs during an impact. It does NOT record RPM, TPS, Speed, etc.
Get your facts straight before you bash a very useful device that helps explain the sometimes unexplainable
Oh, and they do not give tickets via the blackbox, what kind of crap fact is that?

Recently, in national news, there was a story about a politician who crashed his GM suv and the black box told authorities he was traveling in excess of 90mph.
What's funny is that the guy travels with a police escort which testified he was not speeding at the time of the accident.
The black box made liars out of all of them........

See this crap is why car manufacturers haven't advertised this stuff for the past 20 years. Ever since the era of fuel injection and anti-lock brakes, cars have had this so called "black box". Have you ever received a ticket from it? If so speak up because you're entitled to a lawsuit against whoever gave it to you.
The only reason for these things are to determine vital data in the event of a serious accident. This helps protect the innocent. When that guy T-bones you at an intersection and says he wasn't speeding and slammed on the brakes but couldn't avoid you. The dealers in conjunction with police and lawyers do data dumps of sensors for throttle input, wheel speed, brake application and if anti-lock brakes kicked on, air bag deployment, G forces at inpact, etc. etc. This is a record of who was really at fault if both parties refuse to accept blame. These recorders have very limited memory (30-60 seconds tops usually).

It's only a step or two from photo speed enforcement to this. And they just put up signs locally that say "Photo Enforced" right under the speed limit signs. Also Gs during impact can be used to determine speed during impact. Useful info if you're under the posted limit. Evidence of manslaghter if you 10 over going the same speed as traffic. Wait until insurance companies start denying claims becuase you were 5 over the limit. Data recorders are great for comercial vehicals, but suck for the privacy of the individual.

Well as I said, the black box does NOT record speed. Sure you might be able to figure out an approx. speed from it but there is no "speed tab" in the windows program that reads the data...
It would seem illogical that with all the other info it's capable of recording, something simple like speed not be one of those factors.
I'm not trying to be conflictive or discredit the clear usefulness of this device just presenting my "conspiracy theory".
Honda's have had these for years. I was at a dealership talking with a tech and he could tell me exactly what happened to the Civic he was working on before the driver "hit a dog going 25 MPH." The data recorder said he was going over 75 when the accident happened. This was back in '03.
