Default Exhaust Noise too Loud??

I almost got cited by a Sheriff's officer just now because he said my exhaust was too loud. I have the HKS exhaust and I do not think it is any louder then regular aftermarket exhausts out there. I didn't get a ticket because I pulled into my garage and he followed me into my driveway. Anyways, I was wondering what the quantitative decibel number for exhaust noise would be. Just for my own knowledge and not to be an ass or anything. Thanks..

Is the exhaust louder than a Harley? How many Harley's get pulled over?

if you buy a recent issue of Sports Compact Car, they found out CHP and Sheriffs are WRONG when it comes to CA law regarding the noise. i'll look for the article right now.

Here's the rules from the CVC Handbook. I printed these out and keep them in my car just in case a cop wants to cite me for a modified exhaust. Here's the info: CVC

23130. (a) No person shall operate either a motor vehicle or combination of vehicles of a type subject to registration at any time or under any condition of grade, load, acceleration, or deceleration in such a manner as to exceed the following noise limit for the category of motor vehicle within the speed limits specified in this section:

Any other motor vehicle and any combination of vehicles towed by such motor vehicle
Speed limit of 35 mph or less ----- 76 dbA
Speed limit of more than 35 mph -----82 dbA

(b) The noise limits established by this section shall be based on a distance of 50 feet from the center of the lane of travel within the speed limit specified in this section. The Department of the California Highway Patrol may provide for measuring at distances other than 50 feet from the center of the lane of travel. In such a case, the measurement shall be corrected so as to provide for measurements equivalent to the noise limit established by this section measured at 50 feet.

Well..whether it's legal or not, the cop really can't cite you unless he had the proper tools to measure your sound according to those standards Sections (B) &

Thanks for all the info What the. I'll be sure and print out that section and keep it in my car. Of course I'll omit the part about me sticking it to his face. Anyways, my Injen setup is pretty cool. I have the piping going all the way down to the right fake vent and the filter is sitting right there. I just have to cut out those vents and I'll get plenty of cold air into that baby. My dyno showed about a 7 HP gain. You can do a search for it and there are pictures and the dyno chart. Also, Marcus took some pictures of it and it's in the speedoptions Irvine meet article. I'll have to ask Ron for the production release date. Thanks again for all your help. It's not that I'm fighting the law, I just want what's fair.

"They should stop wasting our time on front plates, exhaust, etc, and go after the real criminals! "
