Default Factory Roll Bar Question...

I was wondering if there is any room behind the plastic panel that is part of the roll bar hoop. Right up under the hoop the panel is flat and was wondering if there was any body bracing up under it. The reason why I was wondering is because I was thinking about cutting a hole for some coaxial speakers there instead of in the panel below that. Any help guys would be appreciated. I could not come up with anything with the search engine.

I'm sorry. I read your question three times and I don't know what you're talking about. Pics please.

I would probably reconsider doing something like this. There isn't a huge area of protection for your melllon as it is in the S. Thankfully most people that roll have pretty good outcomes. But to chop a hole in that 'base' support area of the roll bars... I'm thinking you asking for major problems.

Well if it is just the plastic panel (no frame or bracing), there cannot be any problems. If there is metal bracing back there then obviously I dont want to do that. That is why I was asking. I havent popped that complet plastic hoop and panel off to see what was behind there.

Sounds like you're looking to do something like this (am I reading you right?)

Lucid Automotive

I have a set of rear speakers from Lucid - to my mind, that's all that is needed with the stock HU to make tolerable sound on the freeway.

Kindly post a pic or two of your setup. The audio system is my biggest gripe with this car.

The pics on the site were not clear to me.

thanks.

I purchased Polk speakers as replacements for the stock ones in the door, left the tweeters alone, got new rear Polk speakers pre-installed in the grill behind the seat (so all I had to do was swap the panel), and the wiring harness. The stock '02 HU comes with outputs for 4 speakers, but only the front 2 are used. Lucid's wiring harness lets you run wires to the rear. Total setup was about $260.

You can just cut the panels yourself, of course. It's the wiring harness that you really need. It taps into unused outputs on the stock HU, so you're not just adding speakers, you're adding output.

At freeway speeds, I can hear my music now. But then, I don't expect nor want concert-quality in a convertible anyway. You'd be surprised how much difference the rears make - you'd think they would be completely muffled by the seats, but it works pretty well.

Man, I love that red interior. I wish they were more easily available.

Yes that was my worry of the speakers being muffled by the seats. That is why I wanted to put them higher up just below the hoops. Thanks for the help and pics guys!!
