A Faulty Shifter????
Anyone notice an unsmooth feel from shifting from 2nd to 3rd and sometimes between 1st to seccond. This is NOT a grind but feels as if the shifter does not engage cleanly. BTW the car has about 1800 miles. Is this just part of breakin????
That unsmooth feeling happens to me frequenty in the 2nd to 3rd shift, but this is due to the cold weather in florida right now and the transimission not warming up enough. After a good say, 15-20mins it then shifts a lot smoother. I'll have to see if this goes away come the warmer months.

OMG
this happens to me all the time when shifting from 2nd to 3rd. Also when shifting from 1st to 2nd I hear this scratching sound that you would normally hear when shifting into reverse, what wrong?
I have a 03 wit 60 miles so far....

Yeah, I've got the same on my 00. No 1-2 grind, but a slight catch 2-3. But, it goes away when I accerate aggressively. At low rpm I try to blip the throttle a little above rev match for 3rd when shifting, this seems to help. I've got 10,000 miles and I'm changing my MTF next week w/Honda fluid. I'll let you know if that helps.
Don't worry, be happy! So, you're NOT grinding and you're NOT having any issues with problematic gear engagement and yet, you are worried about this little catch ........................ Hmmmm!!!?????
This is a very short throw, close gated gearbox - very precise and very compact. It is also a mechanical device and with all mechanical devices, it will have a "mechanical" feel depending upon the circumstances under which it is used.
If you want absolutely no "catching" and no "notchiness", find a '71 Datsun pick up truck. That gear box has 2.5 foot throws, no discernable gates, NO FEELING WHAT-SO-EVER! Is that what you want?
This notchiness and "catching" tells me I've found and have solidly engaged a gear. I'm comforted by that feeling.
The reverse thing is a different deal again. You are putting the gearbox into a gear that basically stops the tranny from spinning. It's no different than if you were sitting in neutral and then immediately put it in 1st. You are suddenly putting a stop to a complex spinning mass. If you don't like this sensation, put the clutch in and wait a few seconds for the tranny to slow down or stop OR put it into 3rd or 4th for a split second just to stop the tranny, then go into 1st or reverse. 3rd or 4th will not give you the same sensation due to its ratio.

XViper,
If this is "normal" then I'm OK with it. Since I have no comparison to make with it, I did not know if this was a problem to be fixed, or I was making a mistake when shifting. Otherwise, I JUST LUV MY S!!!
With your clarification, I'm really ready to
Thanks!
As always, you always come through with the correct answer.

I've been debating taking the car into Honda for them to look at, but I suspect they will come back with "There's nothing wrong."
