Default Final Thoughts from a original "day 1" S2000 driver

Bought mine on Sept 19, 2000 [EDIT IT WAS 1999!] first day available vin #175. Looks like today will be finally be sold. I wanted to provide some final thoughts for those who also love these cars.....

- my favorite funest car I have EVER owned; no comparison
- I remember on this forum and the bmw forum people debating whether the old Z3 Mcoupe "clown shoe" were better. One data point is I recently sold the Z4 Mcoupe (this exact car which was basically all M3 competition underneath; 330HP); https://www.bmwblog.com/2008/04/16/b...e-other-m-car/ I sold this awesome car to a collector last fall a 2007 and after coming home after business trips I always wanted to drive the S2K over the more powerful Mcoupe; there were only 3132 of this BMW made and hesitated selling it as it was collectible but ended up selling it before S2K which I planned to never get rid of
- the shifter remains the absolute best like a 22 rifle whereas the bmw really had a crappy shifter.
- dont be afraid to really drive the car but change fluids and be meticulous on maintenance
- recently bought the new Z4 382HP 3.9 to 60 in frozen grey and love that car but truthfully the s2K is more fun to drive - just a surgical machine for the twisty roads
- purpose built surgical sports car - LIGHT and fun. These cars will all be gone soon with the manuals disappearing.
- the sound! wow. electric may have torque and speed (heard new boxster will be all electric) but the experience of a high revving race car is 50% of the experience and thrill of driving.
- slot car or go cart like feel.
- why selling? I just dont drive it that much more with other cars - plan was to keep it forever after recently restoring seats but with retirement a year or so away figured it was time to pass it on to another enthusiast who would love it and enjoy it. Buyer today may drive it but will not sell it to anyone even if they offer more if they are not a true S2K enthusiast.
- I still keep the radio off so can smile and enjoy the scream of the engine!
- Bottomline: fricking amazing car, evokes emotion like no other when driven, after 20 years the smile I had driving it this morning is the same.
- and last but not least... after driving it this morning with buyer coming later today, I told my wife I can't sell it. She said it is time. Haha... will truly be emotional to let this car go. LOVE it!

Probably have a few other thoughts later. To all the original owners and those getting it now, enjoy your drives - it's truly a very special car!

Good luck and I hope you don’t regret your decision. It’s amazing how driving this car never seems to get old.

It seems as many owners stop driving the cars or just don't have the time to drive them that the decision is made to sell them. I can relate to that. Once you start thinking about selling it is almost like the decision is already made.

A twenty year run is a pretty good one. I wish you well after life without "your S2000" begins. I went through a similar process when I sold one of my motorcycles a couple of years ago (although I had only owned it for eleven years). In my case, knowing that the bike was going to a fellow enthusiast who really appreciated the motorcycle for what it was and who was capable of taking good care of it made all of the difference for me.

Thanks for your thoughts, hang in there.

I think you mean Sept 19, 1999! (Even so, I edged you by a couple days, haha...though you got a lower VIN!)

Great story, agree with everything you wrote about how fun and unique this car is. I'm not driving mine much either these days, but still nowhere near ready to let it go...

Cheers!

yes Sept 19 1999! that was the right day. Still remember first time I saw the car at the dealer and it blew me away. back then it had a very unique look to it. I remember a guy at the gas station near my house ran over, voice raised running around the car, looking at the headlights and said what the heck is this? some kind of Ferrari or something or is it a new Porsche?. (i know that sounds dumb now is it does not look exotic now but it was unique back then - my boss has had two of the newer maseratis with the shark nose and i think those headlights are very S2K like!). Still remember how excited the guy was and wanted to hear all about it....

I am newer to the S2k. Right now I am in love. Can't imagine being without it. But, I know life moves along and you never know
