My gearbox has to get ripped apart because of the grind. Should I risk putting the console cover on before they do their dirty work? If they scratch it, will they be on the hook to replace it?

I'd wait. Even thought the tape can be reattached, I wouldn't want to risk the leather being scratched or otherwise damaged.
