Default Finally gutted air box :) Results......

Was going to do it last week but got nervous cutting anything on my s2k....Got home from the gym and took out some cutting tools and started.....15min later and its done! Took out the L shape on the lid, the middle wall, left about an inch and half left for water protection. Then also blocked the chambed to the resssonator. Used 2 layer of green duct tape then used a pieice from the airbox I had cut and that covered 2/3 of the whole and then I put 3 more layers of tape.....I also have a K&N high flow filter. Spoon says to take out the L shape, the wall and block the chamber so this was coming from a profesional source besides many members!!

Took her out and noticed a humming mmmmmm at idle and startup near the front. Not sure if that was there before since I never payed attention to that before so it might have been there before. So I took off in 1st and got a new noise Right when it hit VTEC or just right before a super loud bass "mmm
mmmmmmmmmmm" goes off. I really don't think that was there before but again maybe I never payed attention. I tryed to be real detailed in listening. It was loud after VTEC but I can't tell if it was louder or not since it was loud before heh I only did a few runs in 1st gear.

Also I read from one member tape may slip off because of heat. If someting does go into the ressonance chamber like my piece of plastic then its no biggie since it is just the ressonance chamber and doesn't lead to the engine correct? I heard of another member sticking a sock in there to before

I'm thinking I'll do the spoon duct for $160 next maybe...but Im happy for now since it was free and I still have $$$ to spend on mods and I have better air flow and more sound. The same guy who does the spoon replica is about to do a replica Gruppe intake? not sure if that is like the spoon.

Any real benefits to doing this? Where's the resonator? Some pics of the final result would be great.

All winter I had the top of my airbox off, love the way it howls at you that way but as soon as it started to warm up I put it back on as I was starting to feel loss of power (heat soak). At that point I tried this mod myself gutting the airbox and plugging the res-chamber.

I may be spoiled by the sound and percieved feel (I'm sure it's placebo for the most part) of the car w/ the airbox cover off but I really didn't notice much difference at all w/ the airbox gutted. One of these days I'll get an AEM V2 but just haven't yet.

BTW, I took my cover off again recently for about 1/2 hour trip across town, down here on the Gulf Coast temps are well over 100

There has to be a reason that the plastic piece is there. You really think you got any gains beside the noise?

Sure there's a reason for it, as raw as our cars are Honda did try to make it a little bit palatable across the board and cut down some intake noise (that lots of us seem to enjoy). The baffle in there serves to catch a bit of dirt/sand and probably a bit of water (although that's a very minute possiblity).

Removing it (and plugging the resonator) opens up just a tiny bit of sound but as I said above it was hard to notice after becoming used to the noises from a completely uncovered box.

My exhaust seems a lil louder to for some reason, and its def more deeper sounding the intake when VTEC in 1st gear. I think I VTEC my s2k 15 times today new record VTEC transition is smoother now or maybe its because its so hot 88 degrees or so.

1/2 hp doesn't say much since most dynos are 2hp within error. Also how could you lose HP, there is more airflow now. Alot of the UK guys had this discussion also and it made pretty good sense that you get more noise and a lil more air and who knows maybw 1/2 more HP

there is a reason why spoon very respected compnay says to get the most out of your airbox is to do those three things. The stokc box is very efficent but has small resrictions. Basically you are making it more efficient If you are sticking with the air box get a K&N and do this mod Its free, takes 15-20min and you car breathes a lil better!

edit: duct tape works perfect and its stayed on 100% with the piece of plastic. I like that low rumble in 1st gear mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!
