First Drive Impressions
took my 06 autocrossing last weekend. i admit i am a novice to both the s2000 and autocrossing but imho the car with vsa on was far from tailhappy. i was very suprised at what a stabile platform it is.
Novatemp:
If you are flat tracking the car (squaring off corners), then turn off the VSA by all means. Sometimes, with a car that pushes (understeers, like most everyday front drive street cars), squaring off the corners is a solution to the problem. Not with the S2000.
The S2000 (at least my '06) is pretty nuetral, though it tightens the line nicely on lift off (oversteers), and runs wider with throttle. This is a thoroughbred characteristic, IMHO, and makes the car fun to drive fast. You needn't drive 10/10ths at all to experience it.
In my experience, the car handles extremely well, compared to 99.9 % of anything else on the road (and alot of track prepped street cars, again IMHO).
The VSA, compared to other (mostly German) cars I've driven is fairly benign. You can probably do pretty well autocrossing by simply driving hard with it turned on. Matter of fact, I would suggest that 'til you get comfortable and consistent.
Compliments on your autocrossing! Try an SCCA, etc track day also - you will enjoy it.

The S2000 is tail happy
I've had mine since August, and I'll never get tired of this car. It just gets better.
Hmmm...Redrum...Steven King novel?
Yep; stock B'Stone 03's. Fine rain tire.
Back end is loose on trailing throttle and braking; hooks up beautifully under throttle. Gorgeous handling.
IMHO: Like Porsches, however, the novice reaction when to getting into a corner too hot (lifting off; braking) will put this car back first into the weeds. VSA will help if you stay on the gas.

Saved my butt on US 211 going up to Skyline Drive this past summer. I was entering a tight left-hander, down-shifted to 2nd with a perfect rev match. Turned the steering wheel, tried to hit the apex but then the rear stepped out. I kept my foot on the gas and the VAS applied the brakes to the back and brought the rear-end back in line.
