Default First gear screwup?

Ok, here's the scenario, this has happened twice. I start the car, get on a road, give her gas, and in like 5-6rpm, it seems like it goes out of gear, when it is IN gear. it stops hard, the rpms shoot up, and then it goes back to normal....what the hell is that, it scares the crap out of me.....

you mean the engine cuts out?

that's because you havent' hit three bars. the car isn't warmed up enough, and three bars... three bars... three bars until you can vtech/should vtec. she needs to be lubed up pretty good before you start hammering her, don't ya think? =D

Have you done any clutch drops or any other activity that could have worn the clutch (like used the clutch to "hold" the car on a hill)? And are you sure that your foot is completely off the clutch (and not still there from feathering it to start the car)? You don't have to answer, as I'm only offering possible reasons for the behaviour you're talking about.

It sounds like you hit VTEC, and the torque increase caused either your clutch to slip, or your wheels to break loose. I've had the experience you're talking about in 1st on wet pavement or when the tires are loose. The way you can tell is that the rear end will get a little "loose" and not feel as solid as before it lost traction.

If it is your clutch that slipped, then either your clutch pedal isn't adjusted right (as in the clutch pad isn't getting the full force to keep it from slipping), or the clutch is worn. A few clutch drops/high RPM clutch feathering (starting from a stop at 7k+ rpm w/o sidestepping the clutch) that result in the ozone smell can significantly wear your clutch.

Other than those possibilities, I have no idea.

Schatten, he said the engine RPMs shot up. If he'd hit the RPM limiter when cold, the RPMs wouldn't have increased

I agree w/ Schatten and do think it was the rev limiter stepping in to prevent the engine from going above 6K RPM until it's fully warmed up. It's happened to me too and there was a loud reving sound which may explain why you might think the RPMs are shooting up. Just warm her up completely before VTECing and you should be fine.

This happened to me, and I just figured that the engine was protecting it's self from my abusive behavior. I apologized to my baby and promised that I would never do it again.

...or make them read the owner's manual.
