Default First Oil Change

S2ki members,

What's the concensus on when to change the oil for the first time? 7,500 miles comes to mind, but wanted to verify with the community.

Regards,
Ben

i changed mine at ~3800 +/- some...this is my basis for why i changed the oil...

considering the engine burns a lot of the oil (mine burnt about a quart) figured that since i continued to top off my oil with some Castrol GTX all the time, there wasn't a lot of the original factory oil with additive left inside. i'm not totally sure how much oil the engine can hold tho.

but one thing i noticed, the factory oil that the car comes with does not get dirty ie turn black. it started to get dirty once i started to top off the oil with the castrol...so when i did change my oil, it was kinda inbetween the black and the caramel color...

hopefully i wasn't too premature with the oil change...haven't burned any of the new stuff yet tho...

I don't meet Honda's criteria for 'severe conditions', but I don't really baby by S, either (9K is addictive!), so I plan on changing the oil something like 5000-6000 miles (Owner's manual recommends 7500 miles for the first change). I now have about 4100, so I suspect I'll be near 6000 when it's time to put her away for the winter. That'll be a good time to change the oil anyway.
Though not everyone believes it, Honda uses a special oil for the factory fill, which should remain in as long as possible. I intend to keep my Ginger pretty much forever, so I'm trying to follow the manual to the letter (I'm betting that Honda engineers know best).

FYI, I've burned less than a quart in 4100 miles, though maybe as much as 2000 of that is straight highway driving.

Owner's manual recommends the first oil change at 7,500 if the car is driven under 'normal' conditions ('severe' conditions at 3,750).

I might just go right in between or just a tad bit less.

And I think burning oil isn't really an indicator of how well you broke-in the engine or when you performed your first oil change. It has to do more with how you drive.

I appreciate the input, gentleman.

Please see my comments as well some others in this thread. It talks about "severe" vs "normal".

But ultimately, it's your car and how you define "normal" and which schedule you choose is your choice.

I just had my first oil change today at 4750 miles....they told me they consider Florida to meet severe conditions.

Also, they put Castrol GTX 5W-30 for the first change....should I be concerned???? I do not exactly get freezing temps that the manual suggests for using that viscosity.

I have read too many opinions on the search function to make a formed opinion myself.

If you don't track the car, you shouldn't fret about it. Just go back to the proper oil the next oil change. I run 5W30 in winter but there are some days the temp gets quite warm (70*F) and the car has not suffered as far as I can tell.
