How do you get a "salvage" title from a "light hit" on an 03? It'd have to be over $10k in damage to get totalled out for that.
Otherwise sounds good. Especially if you plan on keeping it for a long time and are handy with tools.
If you're fickle and swap cars often, it's better to pay a little more for a non-salvage to make it easier to sell later.

Cars do not get a salvage title "from a light bumped hit ". Each state clearly defines a salvage condition. Dealers treat salvage cars as 1/2 of book value-and reputable dealers still don't want to be involved due to liability issues. So $10k is high. There are S2k's with ~80k for near that price never wrecked, or with minor prior damage. Wait for one. Or at least one with a clear title. Always run the VIN thru CarFax or AutoCheck.
If you do consider a salvage, pay a professional rebuilder to evaluate the car. It is so much easier to walk away from a questionable deal than to try to resell a bad one.
