Supposedly they have competitions in Japan where they see who can throw the biggest flame out of the exhaust. I think I heard that some will go 20+ ft.

Flames coming out of the exhaust are actually useful to turbocharged cars for countering turbo-lag. Also known as a 'misfiring system' in Initial-D.
