First of all, it's not flat-out, it's one of those things where you are in a time/speed class and you have to arrive as close to your time as possible. Those classes are all pretty fast, but it's not like you can just go for it.

However, there's a similar event that's a hill climb on a Nevada public highway. It has turns and it truly is flat-out. You're going for the fastest time possible. Sounds much more fun for our cars than droning in a straight line with cruise control on.

Its flat out if your car can only go lets say 160 and the high trap speed is set at 170, yes you can come close to your target speed but you will never hit the high trap speed so in my book that is flat out.

Did you forget about the unlimited class? That is flat out.

Here are the speeds for the different classes.
I'm thinking of doing this next year(and the 1/2 mile shootout).
Good excuse to go to Las Vegas with the wife(navigator).
I have found(married 33 years) that if I get my spouse involved, I can do more things.

Divisions------------Classes (Target Speed)---------Tech Speed
Touring (T)--------------95, 100, 105, 110--------------------124
Grand Touring (GT)-------115, 120, 125--------------------140
Grand Sport (GS)-----130, 135, 140, 145, 150----------165
Super Sport (SS)---------160, 170--------------------------180
-------------------------------180---------------------------180 PLUS
Unlimited Unlimited------------------------------------180 PLUS
