Default food for thought - ease of theft

Just a blurb from a news article in England:

The NCSR's least secure car is exposed as the Honda S2000, a convertible model, which won just one star in each category. A spokesman for Honda UK said the firm would be discussing its low rating with the ABI

Hmm.. Maybe I should get an alarm as soon as possible....

BTW, how can a thief drives away the S2000 without the keys? I know in T.O.-S2K's case, the thief got the keys. But can they really start the car without our keys? Isn't that immobilizer supposed to work?

No they cannot start the car without the keys. This car is no more susceptible to theft than any other soft top car.

And I would add that it is less succeptible to theft than many convertibles that were built before immobilizer circuits became common in the mid-late 90s.

Has anyone found any statistics on whether or not the car immobilizer circuits acually help prevent theft?

..with the exception of the car being so flashy as compared to most other convertible roadsters. If you were a thief and had two options sitting in front of you, 1) a Mazda Miata or 2) a Honda S2000, which ONE would you attempt to steal [from].

Just my 2 pennies.

My Immobilizer doesn't work, I can't even start it.

I think if you had a computer or something to bypass it you could start it. Otherwise it holds the fuel supply back.

I seem to remember someone saying that if the thief happened to carry their own ECU, key and ignition switch they could, in fact, drive the car away. Not bloody likely.

I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure I've only read one instance on the board of an S2K being driven off by someone who didn't have the original key. In other cases, the cars were almost certainly flat-bedded.
