Default found a broken bolt on my driveway - yikes!!!!

yesterday morning, when i was leaving the house, i stepped on a long bolt.

i picked it up and looked at it - it seems to have broken off the end.

i don't have a digital camera, so i'm going to have to describe it and hope someone has some insight's as to what and where it came from.

description from the head, down:

it is about 6 inches long (what's left of it - a new one would be longer), 10mm, big washer still on it near the head, no threads for the first 4-5 inches, a few rows of hash marks like this XXXXXX (like those found at the end of some oil dipsticks) all the way around the bolt, grease on the hash marks, and finally some threads - and then it's broken off. on the head there is the letter 'O' and the number 9.8 underneath that.

i drove all 3 cars around the block and nothing seemed out of the ordinary.

since i found the bolt near the BMW's left tire, i dropped the BMW off at the delearship and threw the keys, bolt and note in a ziploc bag in the night drop-off slot - waiting to hear from them this morning.

i doubt it's the AUDI since it's only 6 weeks old. and i hadn't driven the HONDA since friday night.

anyone have any thoughts? it's really freaking me out! a friend thought it looked like a caliper bolt.

regards,

nimesh

The subframe on the S uses long bolts to hold it in place.

I would sugg. you take it to a dealer to see if they can id it.

Also have them put on your records that you found it if they can't id it.

Crazy...! But it's not a caliper bolt. The caliper's bolts are not nearly 6 inches long.

Could it be from one of your freind's beaters?

ok, BMW dealer called me - the bolt is not off a BMW.

it has to be the HONDA or AUDI!

i'm guessing HONDA though - i have Digrappa's x-brace and i've heard that it (or any other x-brace) really tightens the subframe and chassis - Fvck, something must have broke somewhere!!!!

next stop, HONDA dealer. i need valve adjustent, LOF, drivers window TSB etc. done anyways - i'll keep everyone posted.

if anyone has any other thoughts though, please continue to share them here.

nimesh

so, i dropped the car off at the honda dealer for various service items and showed them the bolt - they didn't recognize it, but said that they would look around underneath. they said it looked like a "structural member" bolt but weren't sure if it was a "honda" bolt.

i'll continue to update on this issue.

damn, could it be off the 6 week old, $100K Audi???????

all i gotta say is, heads will roll if it is!!!

nimesh

I must say, you have an excellent collection of cars! S8 and S2000, plus a 328i - hopefully the bolt was from a neighbor.

Hey Nimesh

If its off the S8, again I'll stand by my offer to take it from ya, no problem plenty of room at the inn.

I'll even go to the dealership with you to complain in GERMAN.

Jpotts: Yes he makes us all in Toronto sick with his S8..

HHH, yeah, some of them do have a twisted sense of humour...

but, these are also the same people that wouldn't know how to undo a bolt if their life depended on it.

neither my friends nor myself are mechanically inclined.
