Default Frame Damage

I was close to buying this with 34k miles on it for $16.5k. I ran an Autocheck report, and it came up clean. Now I see frame damage on the carfax report:

The story of this 2001 HONDA S2000 (JHMAP11491T002853)
according to our interpretation of the information reported to CARFAX:

* This convertible has had 3 owners and was owned in New York and
Massachusetts. The first title for this convertible was reported
to CARFAX by a New York DMV in 2001.

* It was at a collision repair facility after an accident or other
incident and frame damage was reported. Go to framefacts.com for
information about frame damage.

* It has had no DMV-reported total loss events, like a major
accident, fire or flood.

* It has not been reported by a DMV as having an Exceeds
Mechanical Limits or Not Actual Mileage title.

* It has a consistent mileage history with no indication of an
odometer rollback. It was driven an average of 7,457 miles per
year, which is lower than the industry average of 15,000. The
last odometer reading, reported on 09/10/2004, was 25,599 miles.

* It was not reported by a DMV as a Manufacturer Buyback (LEMON).

* Its basic warranty has expired. You may want to discuss an
extended warranty with your dealer.

* Go to the Detailed Vehicle History for the complete history and
a glossary of terms.

I'll plan on offering $15.5k now. The mechanic found nothing wrong with the car.

Personally, I would stay away... Even at that price.

Did the mechanic specifically look for evidence of frame damage and say there was nothing wrong?

Its a tough call, imo. Frame damage is nothing to mess with, but if your mechanic thinks its clean (and you trust him with completely) maybe its all right.

Is this a chance you are willing to take?

Sounds like it was involved in some sort of accident which was not reported to the police. It could've just been that one of the owners wrecked it himself with no one else involved, and was able to drive it away.

At any rate, with frame damage reported and 3 previous owners I would say "keep looking". Do what you feel is right though. If you have a trusted mechanic give you the OK, and you feel good about it then give it a shot.

The mechanic can be trusted. We didn't specifically look for frame damage. I am bringing it to a trusted body shop on Sat. morning. If he's not willing to lower price, I'm also looking at a '00 with 24k miles, one owner, claims he doesn't drive it in the rain or snow, for $19k.

The car in your link has too many miles, and I will not buy black again.
