Default Friend blew engine in S2K. engine, labor, price?

So my friend accidentally downshifted into too low of a gear, and spun the bearing according to the dealer.

My local dealer is quoting $9500 for a brand new engine, installed.

First question, is that reasonable?

Second question. Does honda still make brand new engines for the S2K? (2001 model). For that price, he's hoping its not a remanufactured engine.

Third question. Are there any third party companies that sell "tuned" brand new S2K engines? links?

Thanks in advance.

thats expensive

but i think the motors go for around 4k plus the labor unless your going to do the work your self

more than likely it will be a low mileage motor!

Plenty of people can sell you a tuned engine, it obviously would be rebuilt to some degree as they are stripping pieces off and adding new ones...

Consider rebuilding the current engine with "go fast" goodies... If your buddy has deep pockets, just do a super charger and all the electronic associated with fuel mang, etc...

Why does it have to be a "new" engine?

This quote is from a local dealership in Maryland. I'm pretty sure he's not planning to do the work himself, as he doesn't really have the time or tools to take on such a job.

I didn't think about getting it rebuilt with the go-fast goodies. I wonder how long it would take for a shop to rebuild it. The body and engine have 105,000 miles.

To your other question, manufacturers are required by law to produce brand new parts for 8 years for a brand new car. So....assuming the 2007 S2000 comes out, they HAVE to produce all parts until 2015. Companies like BMW promised to make parts for certain car for 50 years (Z8).

See what InlinePro can do. They've previously built a 2.5l stroker, and are now working on a 2.7l stroker. I'm guessing they'll charge less for their stroker than the dealer would for the stock engine.

What happened to you is one of my biggest fears with the S - I'm too nice a guy not to let my friends drive my car and as a car enthusiast I'm not going to turn down someone who has a genuine interest in the car. But at the same time, there a many major risks involved, such as a mishift leading to a blown engine. $9500 for a new engine is something I highly doubt my friends (or myself) for that matter could easily afford to spend.

Best of luck in getting the car fixed
