Default Fuel gauge

Is it normal that the last digits of the MY04-05 go out faster that the rest? I can go from 5 lights to 3 lights to 1 light in just a few minutes of non-VTEC cruising. But the most funny part was that a few minutes later already all the lights from the fuel gauge were out Around that point the "empty" signal went on, indicating I had about 8 litres of fuel left. In shock that all the lights in the fuel gauge were out I went to the gas station filling her up with... only 40 litres of fuel! So the question is, is it correct that the fuel gauge indicates how much fuel is in the tank without taking into account the "spare" 8 litres when the "empty" light comes on? Thanks for any comment!

the fuel light comes on when you have roughly 30-50 miles left on the tank. usually closer to the 30. so i want to say it's close to 2 gallons or a little less when the fuel light comes on. (i forgot how many liters in a gallon....)

i do know that having 5 bars on the fuel gauge disappear within a "few minutes" of driving is probably not normal. it COULD maybe happen depending on fuel position from turning, inclines/declines, etc. but if it happens again, you might have a fault fuel gauge??

My experience is similar to the original poster with my MY04 -- once I get to 3-5 bars on the freeway, it starts to drop like a stone. I've never run it long enough after the light came on to really know how far I can go from there. I've gone perhaps 5-7 miles, but no more.

just happened to me today. fuel gauge went to no bars real fast with fill up light. i was on an beach where is one bridge to get out which had a horrible backup because some car broke down on it.
i had to chill out for over an hr til the traffic got better then was sweatign it out til i reach any gas station. there was actually 2.5gallons left. all that drama for nothign kekeke
i was happy to earn 31mph though on that fill up.

my guess its about 2gallons left when the fill light goes on.

This type of thing has been discussed in previous posts and it seems that many have experience (myself included) similar fuel quantity indication quirkiness. Basically the fuel gauging system leaves much to be desired as far as accuracy and consistency is concerned.

It's a good idea to reset you trip mileage counter after fill ups and use it as a guide to determine when to head to the gas station.

OK. Today after I had 0 bars on the fuel gauge, I drove about 10 miles to the gas station. I put in about 11.58 gallons so, I should have been able to go a full 45 miles after hitting 0 bars(probably around 60 after refill light came on).

Distance since last fill up was 250 FYI.

Yeah, I'd say at least 50 miles once the idiot light goes on.

That said, it's never a great idea to run the tank dry. Gas impurities (particularly water) float to the top of the tank, and that's what you'll suck in if you run it dry.

Also, I'm not sure if the S2000 has a fuel pump in the tank itself, but other cars I've driven actually depended on the fuel in the tank to cool the pump itself. Constant running dry would shorten the life of the pump.

[forgive me, I'm too lazy tonight to go get my shop manual and check... It's been a scorcher here in New England today. ]

I think I filled up to 13.03 gallons for my Integra which also has a 13.2 G tank. That was crazy and I was getting prepared to push!
