Wow, what an awesome project. Kudos to him for diving head first into a huge project like that! Can't wait to see the final product of all his work. I read about half the blog, he says the motor weighs 144 lbs and the 45 LI batteries weigh about 600 lbs.

Neat engineering project. I'll be following this one.
45 units * $264 = $11,880 for the batteries, not including the $3000 charger. He first estimated $6k for the conversion. Wow.
Total weight of the batteries is 550 lbs. He's estimating a final weight for the car of at or just slightly blow factory.

Looks like the motor he chose maxes at 144 volts at 500 amps. That's 72kW, or 96.5 horsepower.

It's neat that he's using the factory transmission. That's gotta be a lot of wear on the synchros, though. I wonder how sophisticated he'll make the controller? It's possible he could put some logic in that would let you shift (both up and down) without ever using the clutch. I also wonder how much torque the motor will put out, and how well the transmission would handle it.

Wonder why he's using the factory trans. Most diy ev projects, or even the tesla use 1 or 2 speed trans.

It will be great to see the end project. I am curious to know how quick it will be and how the handeling will be effected due to the placement of the batteries.

That's awesome, kudos to him!

I want to see the technology progress a little. I would love to see someone come out with some wheels with the motors built in to add to non-electric cars. Imagine a stripped electric S2000 with 4 motors, one in each wheel. Horsepower / torque is delivered almost instantly with an electric motor, it could have some serious potential...
