Default Gas mileage evaluation

It's a rare occurrence that someone would have the opportunity to accurately compare the gas mileage of a S2000 while stock, geared, and supercharged. Well it just so happened that not only did I have that opportunity, but I'm anal retentive enough that I've actually kept up with the mileage from every fill-up I've done with 2 cars over the past year and a half. I purchased a 2002 S2000 in October 2005, and drove it stock for a little less than 10,000 miles. At that point I installed 4.44 gears on it and drove it another 5,000 miles before she was tragically totaled. I then purchased a supercharged 2001 S2000 which I have currently put about 7000 miles on.

I've had a virtually identical commute the entire time. Probably 80-90% of the time I'm commuting at 45-55mph with plenty of traffic lights, moderate traffic, and plenty of vtec. I've done some true stop and go city mileage, along with the occasional 200-400 mile trip, a once a month autocross event, and a couple group drives.

After about 22,000 miles of driving I've come to find averages of:

Stock: 21.70
Geared: 22.02
Boosted: 21.66

The best highway mileage occurred with the geared car, typical highway mileage is 85mph. During my typical driving 45-55, w/ traffic lights all 3 cars performed almost identical. The boosted car did suffer poor mileage on our group drive 16mpg during the drive, while the stock car came in at 21mpg during a similar drive. Video of boosted drive so you'll understand why I got poor mileage http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mok4dwj0uSA

Hope you guys enjoy the analysis

Boosted is very vague. Superchargers will get less mileage, whereas turbos get better than stock mileage.

As an average thats true

But I'd say both would get less then stock milage when your WOT especially since you want to richen up your fuel map with FI during WOT

... I wish this was even remotely true in my case. Try finding a tuner that can tune a standalone ECU correctly for both WOT and cruising around town. My car gets around 19mpg on the highway, and just pisses through gas around town. I'm not saying that this is always the case, but i'm willing to bet that it is more often than not. Just my 2 cents, but i'm glad to see that the SC'd guys can get some nice gas mileage out of stock FI setups.

I'm glad I'm not the only one getting ~20 mpg with 18s and a test pipe. I thought my mpg would be better, but even stock is still only around 21.

Damn - now that I'm back to stock gearing from 4.77 I'll be getting nearly 30 on the highway and 24 or so in the city like I was before.

xclusive - don't all tuners know how to tune WOT though? It seems like it'd be a good thing to find a good partial throttle tuner as they could just tune WOT anyway like everyone can.

I am boosted and geared (CT SC and 4.77's). My highway MPG went up to 26 and my city, well, I don't really drive it in the city so I can't really tell you.

it doesn't make sense in my eyes how gearing got better gas mileage? youre constantly at a higher RPM regardless of how fast ur going?

anyone care to explain it?
