Default gas smell and shifting question

MY03

1. after driving for a while, when i turn off the car.... i smell a hint of gas...but there is no leak.....what the s the problem?

2. to save gas, i shift at 3k RPM....sometimes lower, is that good? when drivin the streets i keep my RPM at a steady speed at 2k or 2.5k max...thats not in the freeway

3. my car guzzles gas, and i hardly punch it. i lose like 2 bars sometimes a day, if i drive like 30-40 miles...i though we were supposed to get like 24mi / gal? isnt it a 4 banger? and i haaaaaaaaardly redline, i mean i'ma in granny shifter

thanks

EDIT: this is not my daily driver...moms camry is

What kind of mileage are you getting? I got an average of 22/23 in my '01 and a little less in my '05. Do you do lots of stop and go driving or is it just long freeway hauls? I don't have any ideas about the gas smell.

Sometime when i smell gas its because the gas cap has come undone a bit.

BTW, when accellerating, lower RPMs does not mean higher gas mileage. For every engine there's a 'sweet spot' where it is most efficient. For ours, it's rather high, definately above 3k RPM. Try driving a tank minimizing WOT but shifting higher. So accellerate at about half throttle and shift around 4500-5k RPM.

P.S. 30-40 miles loosing 2 bars in an 00-03 is not that bad. That's about my round trip to work and back and about right.

I got 28 mpg driving to the dragon, 20-21 mpg on the dragon and I typically get about 23-24mpg with my mixed daily driving. This has been hurt lately due to hitting stop and go on the way home every day, but not too bad.

Just take Beano before you eat, and there will be no gas.

If you smell gas after you drive, you may want to check under the hood for leaks in any of the fuel lines. Typical spots could be near the fuel filter or any other fuel line connections.

As for your gas mileage...
I agree with mbilderback. You probably need to shift higher. Don't press the gas pedal farther (i.e. WOT), just shift higher.

For example, just think how much force it takes to accelerate a bicycle in a gear that's a bit too high. You have to use a lot more force. Similarly, it is easier to accelerate your car at a moderate rate by staying in a lower gear a bit longer, and likewise uses less gas.

Check your manual for optimal shift points. Also, if you keep pumping gas into the tank after the gas pump initially kicks off when your tank is full, you are likely flooding your fuel vapor system, and that could be why you smell gas.

you need to figure the actual mpg, not just look at the bars. tank is not that big

yes. calculate your mpg.

1. fill tank to full.
2. reset trip computer to zero.
3. note mileage on trip computer at next fill-up.
4. fill tank, and note amount of gas pumped in.
5. Divide Miles by gallons of gas pumped.

And you'll get the avg number of miles per gallon you've driven.

You'll find it to be around 23-25 mpg in mixed daily driving.
best I've ever had was 28mpg, and that was all highway.

if I had to make a wild-ass-guess, a 1/2 tank takes me about 100-120 miles. so two bars is nothing really...

I've had the same problem for 5 years and Honda can't figure it out. My car smells like gas when I'm driving on warm days. I've tried to watch if its when the tank was full and almost empty. Doesn't make a difference. Drove it into local Honda garage on a warm day when it smelled. They had three mechanics standing around it saying it smelled like gas but couldn't figure out why. They wanted me to leave it a couple of days to look at it but I drive it every day, so there is still the problem.
