I'm a little confused here. If your friend is a tech, wouldn't he know what parts are required? Are you willing to trust this to someone who doesn't know what's involved?

BTW, there's a thread in the FAQs at the top of UTH that outlines the bare minimum of what you need to do this job.

i just bought a 4.77 gear ...
Your stock diff is still in one (1) piece right?

Take your time to read and learn about the install.
Get a service manual (Helms make a good one), that's a MUST!
That manual will give you the info you need.
Some parts need to be changed (follow the manual)
It is up to you to decide to change other parts while you have the diff open.
It is not rocket science.
You do need some special tools.
Without them you should not even try (serious!)
If done incorrectly you will ruin your diff, not "just" your new gears, your Torsen as well.
I've done my own install, at work, with all the tools (and a bit more) present.
Take a look in the "Technical forum", just above UTH.
That is where I posted the whole story.

Succes!

I guarantee you that you and your friend will hose this install.

no offense to your friend, but I doubt he has the experience needed to do this. This is a PRECISION JOB!!!

If you think you can do it, go for it!

Just remind you installing diff gear is tricky. If the gear is not adjusted in the proper spec, it will clash, whine or break the teeth.

Installing diff gear is a job for specialty shop. I know this for sure. Lots of gear shimming to make sure the gear mesh properly.

Find a shop that specialize in differential, maybe cheaper in the long run.
Good luck!
