There is nothing wrong with engine braking is there?
No, provided you do it right.

Try reading this - http://www.standardshift.com/faq.html

The most important thing for you to do is be smooth. When you get on and off the gas you shift the car's weight, and in an S2000, that can be dangerous if done wrong.

Also, practice shifting using just your fingertips on the shifter. This will give you a feel for how little pressure and speed you need to shift. The last thing you want to do is ham fist a shift from 3 to 2 when you're aiming for 4.

Just keep practicing, you will get better. Very little chance of hurting anything unless you really mess up horribly and accidently downshift when you should have upshifted.

I think what you are doing is rev-matching and you just got your terms messed up.

Keep practicing. In my opinion the 1000rpm difference isn't going to impact THAT hard.

Yup double-clutching is unnecessary nowadays. Just downshift normally and blip the throttle to rev-match and you'll be fine. Also be careful upshifting, when I first got the car, I wasn't used to the tight transmission and dumped it into 2nd instead of 4th a few times... lucky I was just cruise shifting at 3k and not driving it hard...

double clutching isn't necessary but it puts less stress on your synchros if you revmatch properly when you do it. the syncrhos are there so you don't have to double clutch, but doing it won't hurt anything. also, if you skip gears without revmatching, (4->2 to pass someone , or accelerate hard in 2nd/3rd and jump straight to 5th/6th) you can put serious wear on your synchros and you'll have problems down the line. always hit alll your gears or else revmatch properly.

this is a very good resource: http://tl.acurazine.com/forums/showpost.ph...87&postcount=17

start here and read everything posted by REDMX5, if you want more useful information on downshifting do's and don'ts:

I like the suggestion to "blip" the throttle when downshifting. No serious thought needs to go into "how many revs do i need to make?" Have fun with the car and don't turn driving this car into a job.
