As a former Oakland, CA cop (and motorcycle cop too), I can tell you one type of driver I always vowed would never get a ticket from me.

It'd be someone who sits there looking straight ahead. And as I reach the side of the car, rolls down the window a few inches and says, "I'll have a cheeseburger, order of fries and a chocolate malt please." I never had that happen though

Had lots of pretty ladies turn on the charm. Figured they always got out of tickets that way, so I'd try a little test . . . When they'd say, "Are you going to give ME a ticket officer?", I'd say why yes, that's why I pulled you over. Then I'd watch as they would invariably become nasty snarling little wenches, hurling insults and abusive language. The metamorphosis was truly amazing. Those few that remained civil would usually still get a warning instead of the tag.

I got off the department more than 20 years ago. At that time, there was no hassle involved with giving a warning until one actually started writing out the ticket. To void it then was a bit of a pain, but doable, as they did account for each ticket by sequential number. Don't have a clue how it is now though.

Don't fish out your drivers license or registration until asked - just stay seated without moving and keep those hands in sight.

If you need to reach for your license in your back pocket or open the center compartment to retrieve your registration - wait for the officer to arrive next to your car, explain to the officer what you are reaching for and where you are going to retrieve it - retrieve your documents very slowly with no sudden movements.

Don't become a fatality statistic from an overworked, overstressed, undertrained, and underpaid civil servant.

aran - I read this in a book many years ago, when I was 17, I do it every time and its a good tip. it shows you have concern for the officer's safety. he pulls over everyone out there. I mean, have you watched COPS lately? are you one of those guys? or just a girl/guy going a little too fast in a car?

thanks aran!

Well, it's not something one should count on, and it obviously depends on the officer, but I've experienced it enough times to see a definite trend.

I agree that the officer has a better idea of who they are dealing with, but in Michigan, the CPL is linked to the drivers license, and the LEO won't get this information until after he/she has stopped you.........so for us here in Motor City, this nullifies the prospect of the cop knowing I'm a 'good guy' for having a concealed firearm license before I am stopped (which incidentally, I personally have one).
It's not a pre-stop thing: you hand your CHL to the cop when they ask for a DL (required by law in some states), and then the magic starts

I thought they knew it before they approached you. I could have sworn they told me that in the class I took. Oh well.

Either way, it can only help you in an otherwise unpleasant situation.
