I'd rather not have any ads but then I wouldn't have a free email account. anyway I read more into gmail's privacy policy and it addresses the ad-targeting issue.

Gmail's ad system works the same way as their AdSense ad service. It just scans the page for keywords and trys to guess the overall content of the page. Just take a look down THIS page in the Quick Reply box. There's a "Ads by Google" box with S2000 specific ads. No one is reading your e-mail and they do nothing with the pages they scan.
