Max Power = 196.8
Max Torque = 131.2

Are those decent numbers for stock? Only mod is K&N air filter. Car has 11k miles on it and ran it with 91 gas.

Just about average for the 197 hp. It usually ranges from 190 to 210.

I don't understand how a car that is rated at 240hp / 157 torque, gets readings that are lower.

Am I not understanding something?

Yes thats wheel HP measured, as opposed to flywheel which is what manufacturers use.

There's HP loss going through the tranny and diff.

Here's a little help with HP:

SAE Gross:
Horsepower is measured at the crank with a brake dynometer (bhp), without any accessories (exhaust system, air cleaner, air-conditioning compressor, and power-steering pump). This method was used in the United States until 1972.

SAE Net:
Horsepower is measured at the crank with a brake dynometer (bhp). The engine is set up just like it will be installed in the car. This method has been used since 1972 in the United States, and is what most manufactures use in their published HP figures. This value can range from 20-40 percent less than the same engine rated by SAE Gross.

DIN:
Horsepower is measured at the crank with all of its accessories. It is set up like it will be installed in the car, and is always a

Damillster,

Great info, I always wondered about what these ratings actually meant, but never took the time to research the subject more.

Thank you for the scoop!

so what good is the crank horsepower when it is not what moves the car. do they go by it just to be able to publish higher figures or is it because all dynomometers are not standardized.

It is easier for a manufacturer to test the engine at the crank, than for an individual...because the engine is already out of the car. The numbers are higher than rwhp, but since all manufacturers use this method, it is a good figure to use for the sake of comparison. RWHP figures have numerous factors that influence the end result that go way beyond engine...some of which vary even between trim levels on the same model (with the same engine). BHP is a decent way to rate an engine, by itself. Just understand its simplicity and limitations.
