Got pulled over for modified exhaust today!
Only problem is, I was in the one car I own with a stock exhaust - my S2000.
Story goes something like this....
I'm in Hermosa Beach, waiting to pull out into traffic on PCH. Its a nice day and traffic is heavy. I see an opening and pull out quickly, taking the revs up to about 8000 rpm to match the 35 mph speed of traffic, then shifting into 3rd gear.
Less than half a block later I'm coming up to traffic just pulling away from a stoplight and I see a police car closing down on me fast. I don't know where he was (stopped, in traffic, whatever), but he's clearly homing in on me. He gets up behind me, lights go on, I pull over.
Top is down, so I sit comfortably as he walks up. He asks to see my driver's license, registration and proof of insurance. I get all that out for him and hear his car radio calling back my name as the registered owner of the vehicle (phew! :-). He's about to go back to his car to check my documents out, but I stop him and ask why I was pulled over.
Now, I'm expecting to hear that he thought I was speeding (I wasn't), or that I pulled out dangerously into traffic (I didn't, but that's a more subjective call). Instead, he tells me that I pulled out pretty fast and got on it so hard that he thought I had a modified exhaust! He then asks if its an OEM exhaust and I say yes. But I point out to him that I reached the speed limit in 1st gear, which is very high rpm and pretty loud. He says, o.k., let me just run your papers and I'll get you out of here. Five minutes later he comes back and tells me to have a nice day. In all actuality, he was one of the nicer cops I've met. Younger guy, asian, very polite.
Kind of funny. Glad he didn't ask to look under the hood and see my AEM CAI :-)

It's good to hear of a situation where an officer chooses to act on "probable cause" and not try to project an overbearing attitude. Sounds like he just wanted to "tap you on the shoulder" and let you know he was there.
