I remain a strong opponent of remote start systems. Leaving a car idling inside of a garage is a definite no-no, especially since many homes have bedrooms above the garage, and the fumes may be penetrating a sleeping area. I have heard of cases of children dying of monoxide poisoning from that. Some people in colder climates like the feeling of a toasty warm car when they first step into it on a winter day, and enjoy remote starts and ten minutes of idle. If you respect the machinery, you really do not want to subject the catalytic converter and engine to that lengthy cold idle. Much better to get in and drive away as soon as possible, to allow for a natural warm up. The solitary exception is the case where the windshield is heavily coated with ice which will not yield to the scraper, and that only happens a very few times per year.
My habit is always to park in neutral with the handbrake pulled up. I do remember once, on a dealer's parking lot, starting up my old RX-7 when picking it up after servicing. Step down on clutch, start engine, release clutch while adjusting mirrors. Discover to my horror that the shifter was in reverse! Luckily, I didn't hit anything - stalled the engine after jumping back a few feet.
