Guzzling Oil?
600 miles and still full. During these first miles I haven't gone over 4000 RPM yet (kind of paranoid). So the explanation must be in the revs. The higher you rev, the more oil the engine consumes (I guess).
What kind of oil did you guys add during the first fill ups? The dealer recommended dino oil instead of Sinthetic.
Is that really better? Does Honda sell the same break in oil that comes with the car?

3 days of ownership!!!

folks seem to indicate that oil use follows an abbreviated bell curve of sorts (with the spike pretty early on). oil consumption seems to taper off over time.
i burned 1 quart in the first 700 miles with nothing since.

Whenever this topic arises, I am always impressed at the range of consumption, from none to what seems like alot (although for a modern car, I'm unused to any).) My consumption has been pretty much in the middle of what is listed above. sbarbera, you do VTEC and accelerate hard on occasion do you not? Anyone know, aside from how hard the car is driven, why there would be so much variance (assuming we all were reasonable on break-in, change oil and filters appropriately, warm up the engine before full throttle use, etc)?

OK Chris, I'll buy your explanation. My car is essentially using no oil now. I broke mine in in 2 days, almost all at highway speeds, never went over 5400 rpm, and my range of MPH was essentaily the same as yours (had brief runs at 5000-5400rpm in 6th), and I used just under 2 qts in 4000 miles, none in the first 600 mi.

My oil consumption has been 1 qt. in the first 1,000 miles; and seems to be proceeding at the same rate...looks like 1/2 qt. down now with 1,500 miles.
My break-in was relatively gentle, very little highway, always under 6K, varied the speed.

Did you do the first change or did Honda. If Honda did it, did they say anything about changing the oil before the 3000 mile period?
Cheers,
I have about 1100 miles on my 01 and I just checked the oil last night...The one side of the stick read H and the other side was about one x lower. I decided not to add any at this time. I broke in the car in about 4 days mostly highway, and made a few trips to 7000rpms well before 600 miles and from 599.9 it has been VTEC about 10-15 times per 30 miles (give or take)
Strange how the two sides of the stick show different readings.
