What was horrible about the factory filter?
Just how dirty it was. I had 40k miles and the thing was so dirty that I couldn't see what color it was.

AFE or K&N. AFE being a little better quality but more expensive.

Genrec

Get any filter exept for the spoon it is a waste of $$$. I like the K&N, Gready/Trust, or HKS

Best thing about the K&N is its cleanable so you do not need to spend the $ again. The others I mentioned are foam so you need to replace them after a while.

are you talking about the run of the mill super-mega-uber-hyper-flow HKS mushroom with the foam filter?

they are NOT reuseable, the foam is preoiled from factory(and in replacement) and you can't really get out the dirty trapped inside. i recalled there's a label saying not to wash or reuse after a certain number of miles.(i used to have the 200 green element hks on my turbo)

unless they released something new

one more thing about HKS and any FOAM element filter, they have great flow in general(great for turboed car to min. spool time) but they let in ALOT more dirt than cotton based(k&N) and paper based(oem) filter(which again in the world of turbo'ed car, a filter is better than no filter). You do not what to use it on CAI(or with spoon snorkel) with the amount of dirt it receives.

K&N do let in more dirt than OEM filter, remember this flow and filtering is inversely proportional. you can't get both

I had a Spoon filter and was very happy with it. It's reuseable and flows better than a K&N-type filter. It does let dirt in, but I didn't gut my box so the box trapped a majority of the dirt -- when I changed my oil there was no dirt in it so I think that is a very marginal thing to grade a filter on as long as you don't gut your box.

The K&N filter is not foam, but has a wire mesh reinforced cotton element that IS cleanable. In fact, parts stores that sell these also sell the "K&N Recharge" kit, which includes a cleaner, and an oil to oil the cotton element. Oiling is a must, as without it, the filter will not trap enough of the dirt to protect your engine.

Thanks,
Richard
