Default Hard Top Advice

Just got a call from the dealer and my hard top has arrived. I was just wondering how many S2K owners that have the hard top also have the storage rack?

Not sure if its a PIA to store with out the rack.

Also they need the car for a whole day to do the install

Any feedback would be appreciated,
Bob

I emailed RickS2K about an alternative to the rolling rack. You might want to do the same, to show there is demand.

I suggested that a 5-point harness be assembled to cradle the Hard Top. That would be connected via a pulley system to the roof of your garage. This way, you can literally just hoist the top straight up off the car, and have it suspended (out of the way of things taht could scrath / bump it). I had something similar on my 91 Miata hard top.

You might want to check out www.mmmiata.com. If I remember correctly, their harness expanded, and might just fit the S2000 Hard Top. Just check dimensions.

there's a DIY on here somewhere on how to build your own hardtop stand with PVC pipe.. really easy, cheap and works well. I don't have the link anymore though.. try to do a search.

I've just finished building my own PVC stands. The rolling wheels will be installed as soon as the glue dried up.

The harness was worth it to me when I had my Miata. It gave me piece of mind that my dog wouldn't bump into it or scratch it. It was made of seat belt material, so it was strong. It cost like $100 or something like that. Easy to install, just had to screw an I-bolt into a ceiling joist and it was ready to go. I would sell you my old one, but it finally gave out after 13 years of use (I also left it out in my side yard for almost a year, so that probably affected the life span). You could probably have a local uphostery shop make one for a decent price. They just need to take the dimensions of the top, sew the material into a 5-point star with a 5-point harness on one of the legs, and receivers on teh other 4. Then it is just some nylon rope and a pulley system (found at West Marine, or any boat shoulp for under $100). Should be able to be made for under $200-250. That is still cheaper than the $400+ honda wants, and it hangs from the ceiling.

here is the one on the Miata website (its the Hardtop Hoist)

I have the OEM rack and although I'd love to put up a hoist/belt system, I just don't have the overhead room. The OEM rack is great, looks nice with the OEM hardtop cover in the garage when the top is off too.

Made very well.

I picked up an electric hoist from Harbor Freight when it was on sale (currently they go for $75.00), fabricated a mounting plate, and bolted it up to the ceiling of my garage. Then I took some PVC tubing and some rope and rigged this up:

It works pretty well, but I've got to make some modifications to the PVC tubing going to the rear of the top. I'm able to install and remove the top by myself with this setup.

Some pretty cool stuff here. Unfortunately I don't have the overhead room for a hoist setup.

I do have a storage space (well actually two since I have too many cars) so I will be able to store it without worrying about launching it into one of the cars.

Thanks for all of the info,
Bob
