I posted about this a long time ago...

Car and Driver did a whole report on the value of AWD cars on snow by pitting an A6 with quattro against a FWD version and a mercedes 4Matic with a RWD version.

Their conclusion was that putting on a good set of snow tires performed better on snow than the stock tires with AWD.

The only places it underperformed was hard acceleration and steep hill climbing.

In fact, the cars without AWD systems weighed considerably less and made quick turns and especially braking substantially better, much more important to winter driving.

So slap some winter tires on your s2k and you should be all set!

Has anyone had experience driving in winter with their s2k ?

How is heating the inside with the soft top on ? Is it warm enough ?

thanks

I drive my S2000 all year. Here in Rochester where we get 10' of snow during an average winter, driving is a challenge in any car. Also I live on a hill side - more problems. My solution was to purchase an extra set of alloy rims (S2000 originals from eBay) and mount them with Blizzaks. I switch to snow rims around Thanksgiving (late November), keep them on until April. Driving in winter ice or snow is no longer an issue, even up the hill side. Heat is not an issue either. If the temperature is above 34F I drive with the top down. Cover your neck and wear a hat. The fun is exhilarating. Why store the car for half the year?
Good luck

Friend of mine drove his year round in the midwest for four years. He just had two sets of wheels, one with Blizzaks, the other with summer tires. He was a farm kid from Kansas, and said that S2000 drove better in the snow with proper tires than most trucks do.

I drive mine year round. +1 for the blizzteks. It scared the crap out of me driving in snow/ice on regular tires but the blizzteks make a HUGE difference. The car feels at home in the snow now. Such a blast to drive. Obviously wash it frequently to keep the salt from eating the paint and stuff but with a good set of winter tires youll have no problem.

I had two winters on blizzaks in NY and I couldn't believe how well my S handled. Made me wish I had bought snow tires for my previous two cars. Expensive, but worth every penny.

My late wife had a NA Miata with a hardtop back in the mid 90s. I put a set of winter tires & wheels on the car along with 80 lbs. of water softener salt in the trunk and the car was far better in the snow than my FWD Mazda 626. There was one snowy & icy night when we were driving both cars home from an evening event and I motioned her off the freeway to a parking lot, left the 626, and drove the Miata the rest of the way home.

At the end of winter, the winter tires & wheels got stacked in the garage and the ballast got dumped in the water softener.
